Bob Dylan was a protest era song writer, just as This land is my land, this lad is your land was a protest song against God bless America....now would you believe I have forgotten the writer's name?.......curse this stroke!!!!!!!right it came,,,,Woodie Guthrie......And to think that Kate Smith's God Bless America almost became the National Anthem.....and that tune sung by Kate Smith was written by a Canadian called Guy Lombardo.......Now before someone jumps me about the original author,Berlin,,,,,I did say, Kate Smith's version...

    Cheers,

    Jim

First of all I want to say Hi to miss_Abby I see you live near me...so where do you go to church?

okay now to the topic. As a young girl we were never allowed to wear pants, shorts etc... to church or even a funeral home. I don't wear pants, shorts bathing suits etc... and neither do my kids. I feel that is a personal conviction for me but it was through the preaching of the word of God that opened my eyes. I need straight preaching and I think that is where so many fall short its come like you are and I do beleive get them in but we all need real preaching to help us grow. My mom told me there was a time when men would take there hats off while they were in their car when they even passed a church and now people throw beer cans in the yard and come any ole way. Its not a hoe down its God's house....sorry I seem to be on my soapbox so I will step off now. [IMG]

One person's idea of modest dress isn't necessarily another's idea. And one shouldn't tell someone they are a sinner because they don't dress the way the person thinks they should.
That seems to be a problem here. People have their opinions, but they state them as fact, and expect everyone else to go along with it.
    To each his own.
If you're truly trying to serve God, then you will eventually be convicted if you wear something inappropriate, and will change. Not because someone told you that you were a big time sinner for dressing that way, it's because you are listening to God.

1Cr 1:20 Where [is] the wise? where [is] the scribe? where [is] the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

1Cr 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

1Cr 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

    1Cr 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

1Cr 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

1Cr 1:25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

1Cr 1:26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, [are called]:

    1Cr 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

1Cr 1:28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, [yea], and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

1Cr 1:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.

For those of you who just love Bob Dylan and others of his ilk, maybe you should reread the above. If you think it is ok to dress the way you want to and it is ok, you need to reread the above. If you think what you think is all ok and you don't need a solid gospel preacher to "hoe your row" occasionally, then reread the above.

Your opinion, or mine, is not very important. It is what God says.

That's very true. But who are you to tell us that what you say God says is what God is really saying? (Hope that made sense)

If you take His Word too literally, you will find that you will be mistaken in a lot of things.
Exodus 21:17 says "And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death."
Should I tell my kids that God says I can kill them if they back talk me?

    Read beneath the surface.

Thanks for sharing, Susan. This pretty well sums up "modesty" for me.

Nope, just get some really ugly sunglasses like the kids sunglasses that come in bright colors and different shapes. I think that would cover everything...

    Someone said:
As a Christian woman, I am offended by the long dour dresses, dark socks and woe is me appearance of many Christian women! I think it portrays Christianity in a bad light. The Mennonites in Cleveland, Ga. wore dresses in nice colors, fitted to their body frame, small floral prints and big smiles. I'd much prefer their style to the ladies in our home school group who look so legalistic and matronly.

Modesty to me is not calling attention to your body or revealing a part of your body that should be covered. I do wear a lot of skirts, but I also wear many styles of nice tailored pants and/or capris. I think it is fine to look pretty and stylish as long as it is modest. Some people think modest means other things, like dresses only and such. I think that is fine. I have a good friend that wear only dresses and skirts,so does her young daughter. They always look very pretty, feminine, and also stylish, tailored, and modest. But,there is no reason for a woman to look tired, worn out or even out dated. We can be pretty fresh looking and modest all at the same time.

I buy a lot of my clothes at the Gap...now,you can find some short shorts, halter tops and such. I do not wear those, but I like some of their basic styles. As a woman,I think it is key to wear what your husband likes and promote Christ by being a modest, pretty, kind hearted and a friendly woman. The hidden beauty of the heart is most precious to God.

Oh Jim, what do you do if you have my appearance?! I surely am NOT attractive in the least! Yet I know God's love for me exceeds the makeup of myself. I'll never be beautiful, but I'm striving for Proverbs 31:30 KJB. It's my life verse, and I hope someday I can live up to it. I want to be as my Saviour. Though I'll never be perfect I long to be as close to Him as I can. There's always work to be done.
So though I'm not very pretty, I so wish to be modest...and as Susan pointed out, not so dawdy as to bring attention to yourself. Although my denim skirts, long hair, and light makeup, have caused missunderstanding several times! Recently I was visiting my grandpa in ICU, and gave a man a track as I was leaving. He'd sat near us the whole time we'd been there, so as i was leaving I told him my name and and invited him to church. He didn't really look at the track, just looked at me kinda funny and asked "Ma'am are you one a them pentecostal women?" I nearly died! [IMG] "Oh noo sir! I'm Independant Baptist!" To which he replied "Hey! Me too!"
LOL, I think it just must come with the territory, cause that sure ain't the first time I've been asked that!  [IMG]

First of all Abby... YOU ARE PRETTY! You just don't know it yet! Wait until you're 50 and look back at your photos.... And your nerves will calm as your hormones adjust. Took me til late 20's to get over my nervous tendancies and they sometimes creep back in while my hormones are going out the door! LOL.

Jim, I'm positive, did not mean that God prefers those with physical beauty but that we should make the best of what God gave us. You have beautiful skin, hair and eyes! Don't hide them! Let Jesus shine through your smile and those twinkling eyes!

Has this been going on here?? From what I've seen, a question was asked about modesty, people answered, and now someone is offended by some of the answers because they "are telling others they are sinners" by not dressing a certain way.

I haven't seen any name-calling. All I've seen is Scripture explaining why some of us believe the way we do about modesty, and our personal standards of modesty. That seems to offend. Why?

One other thing. Why do Christians try to pull each others' standards down? Why can't we encourage others with stricter standards in their effort to please the Lord? I don't believe in headcovering like HeadcoveredLady does, but I won't try to talk her out of it or get angry with her for doing it. She's not doing it to put me down; she's doing it because she sees it as a way that she can please the Lord. I know folks who don't watch TV at all, but I do. Do I have the audacity to think that they are so consumed with putting me down that they refuse to watch TV so that I will feel bad when I watch TV?? What kind of logic is that?

Thanks for the soapbox; I'll get down now! [IMG]

Hi bapterian. Though our church does not have a dress code, we have discussed in church council meetings how we might approach this. We decided to write a little blurb in the bulletin a few times each summer. Though it's a brief and gentle blurb, everyone has opportunity to read it and assess their dress. It works for some but not for all. It's an on-your-honor kind of thing ...

I haven't seen any name calling either. I never said there was.

It's the attitude of "I do this because I think God's word says for me to do this, and I think you should, too, or else you're going against God's word" that I have problems with.

If she wants to put a burlap sack over her head, that's fine with me, but she doesn't need to tell anyone else they must do it.

In reading posts throughout this site, a lot of it scary. It seems that the old adage(sp?) is correct. There are two things you never discuss, politics and religion. I can certainly see why now. It doesn't matter what topic I come across, everyone is arguing, fussing and fighting.

I am almost willing to bet that if I said the sky is blue, I would have someone here argue it.

Human nature never ceases to amaze me. Then we wonder why nations fall and marriages fail and our prisons are overcrowded. [IMG]

I didn't see anyone saying I'm a sinner because I dress in slacks and sometimes wear shorts. Did I miss it or was it implied? That, I would have major issues with!
