But it has everything to do with money. Remember the widow's mites.

I've seen arrogance and disdain from those who have no formal theological education towards those who do.

It's the opposite in this thread. The arrogance is pouring forth from the other side.

Personally, I went to seminary because I was called their by God. I have no doubt of that. And, my seminary education has been very valuable to me and I'm thankful for that training. However, had God so desired, I could have gone into the pastorate with no formal education and be just as used as I am today.

    Priesthood of the believer, baby.

Keeps the seminary trained from arrogance.

Keeps the "informally trained" from anti-intellectualism.

Keeps us all from saying more than God has said on any given subject.

Hey-- I’m one of the people who shelled tons of money to get a piece of paper that said I’m "qualified" to be a biblical teacher. But I’ll be honest with ya—I’ve seen several people in these threads that don’t have any university Bible training, who b/c of their effort & dedication are already better at biblical exegesis & systematic theology than many of the people I went to school with. Kinda makes me wonder how much more their abilities would advance if they did get formal training.

    Amen!

You know, I'd love to get a biblical studies degree, but I have been called to another profession and have spent my educational dollars so that I can be better in that field.

I've met quite a few of these types too - informally trained, but terribly knowledgeable. I've also known a few that due to their informal training have chosen to pursue a formal education. Good for them! BUT I respected them highly before that.

"Where a person's money is, is where there heart lies. And a person who is willing to work his tail off, and shell out large sums of money, because he believes that God's Word is THAT important, trumps the guy who says "I can get by without all that" and goes out and spends his money on cars, T.V.'s, and fishing boats."

I put my money into getting the best education possible to help me serve the Lord. I do not think that makes me any better than anyone else. My education gave me tools to use in serving Him. So, yes I put my money where my heart is.

    What??
You argued yourself silly about this on other threads! You could have saved us all a lot of time if you had said this 3 days ago.

Glad to see you've come around though. :tongue3:

I don't know what you are talking about here. I haven't changed the least bit since I began arguing for the benefits of education.

Why would you need to and who are you going to argue the benefits of education? Unless I miss it no one has said education does not have benefits. I must admit that lately we have seen posts that would make one think that education does not make a foolish man wise.

Ignorance does not make an arrogant man humble either.

Amy said that a layman can dig out just as much truth as a seminarian. Thus a seminary degree is a waste of thousands of dollars and agonizing hours of stress and pain.

Why bother if the average layman can get it just as easy as the seminarian?

How about the above "average layman" who has no seminary $$, but spends "agonizing hours of stress and pain" to educate himself?

Then just by virtue of such devotion he is not an AVERAGE layman.

I have said a dozen times that there are exceptional men in history who trained themselves and became as smart and smarter than seminarians. Spurgeon is the example I gave. But he, nor anyone who devotes himself to such rigorous study can be considered an average layman.
