At least the new guy can string a coherent, recognisably-English sentence together, unlike his predecessor. That's got to be an improvement. Plus there's a village in Texas somewhere that now has its idiot back.

That said, I agree Lowery's 'prayer' was offensive (although the Lord knows there ae grounds to forgive him for it). The rest of the inauguration was excellent and cause for hope in these testing times.

Speaking of offensive remarks -- yours qualifies in spades.

Are you seriously claiming he's an intellectual?!

I'm saying that you are insulting in the extreme.

I protested about your 'idiot' comment.Because I registered my complaint you're saying that I think G.W's a genius? No.But ole' G.W., despite verbal fumbles, has a lot more intellectual depth than you give him credit for.You must believe all the comic send-ups on him. That's not so brilliant on your part.

How is that any different than the ones on this board calling the new POTUS a zero? Tit for tat.

Oh, I forgot. Bush is a Republican. Never mind.

He doesn't need anyone to send him up - he does a grand job of that himself.

But I understand - I expect you're one of those who voted for the only partially articulate chimp* and you've got to defend your choice.

*Not just once, but twice, I suspect. Reminds me of your great 'intellectual' himself:

"There's saying in Texas - I think it's a saying in Tennessee - "Fool me once, shame on...uh...shame on you. Fool me twice...uh...shame on...shame on"....you can't fool me twice." Really, George...?

Yep, ditto. How disgusting. And to add a more offensive remark on top of that, is quite over the top, Matt. At least the "chimp" as you call him believes in the sanctity of life, unlike the present sitting. He may be wrapped in a charming package and might be quite the scholar and articulate, but his core beliefs regarding the unborn and infanticide are quite offensive to some of us including the Giver of All Life in the Womb.

Elitists who must work to make others look as unintelligent are neither working in honesty or self security.

Oh, PS, Matt. Have you ever seen any Americans on the BB call the Queen or your Heads of State "chimps" or idiots? How dare you.

His friend Oprah called him "The One". And puhleeze. You with "Caribou Barbie, Pig-Boy, Man Coulter" & other monikers. I figured it was OK to do this sort of thing if you can. Zero is just that. Nothing. An empty suit. That's what I think he is.

Matt Black, you can stay in England.

Bush may not have said "Nuclear" the way you wanted, but I'll bet my full set of teeth he could explain how a reactor works better than most of us here.

And if he's so dumb, how'd he trick your nation into going to war with him ? How did he get every war funding bill he wanted ?

    Dumb ? Hardly.

Sensitive ? No. Discussions with you go nowhere. Experienced. Like I said, I won't explain it further. Read your bible. Show me what's right with it. Show me where Christ wants to save the rainforests.

Oh...puh-leeze! I've seen people here refer to Obama as 'the most evil man in history' and 'the antichrist'; compared to that, my comments about Bush pale into insignificance as far as the definition of 'insulting' and 'disgusting' go. Look to the planks in your own eyes...

I'm quite up for that and would have no objection to that if you wanted to. I think Gordon Brown is an old-fashioned socialist idiot who's ruined our economy and, whilst I don't have any particular bag with Liz Windsor, I think her eldest offspring is an in-bred upper class twit of the first order.

I guess we just don't do that sort of thing. In other countries, I try to find some substance to gripe about & leave the personalities out of it.

    Some points in reply:

    1. I've seen Prince Charles criticised here and I've agreed with that criticism (see above). Same with Gordon Brown and Smiler/Slimer Blair.

    2. Yep, British politicians are a bunch of corrupt liars, by and large, with a few honourable exceptions. That's politicians for you.

    3. The USA claims to be the leader of the free world (as a matter of principle I generally endorse that claim), which gives the citizens in the free world a right to comment on its policies and choice of leaders, even if only the US citizens among us have the right to vote for them.

Maybe it's a Pond difference then: over here, politicians and leaders are fair game for that kind of thing; it's also often pretty difficult in practice to separate the policy from the person (seeing as it tends to be the person who makes the policy).

    He does have funny ears.

We got them here, as well. On both sides. The difference is, the most ardent Bush supporters still were critical of him. The left, over here, cannot seem to find any fault with their party.

Fair enough. But like when I was a kid, me and my brothers fought viciously with each other. But if another kid hit one of us, it would be all of us against the one. That's the mentality you will deal with by calling our leaders "one step above chimp".

And even funnier ideas. Except that I ain't laughing at them...

More fool them if that is the case. Constructive criticism from within is a great thing.

I understand. I guess that's another difference between our two nations: I think it's fair comment to say that the defining American characteristic is one of optimism whereas that of Britain is one of cynicism. Therefore we start with the presumption that our leaders are self-advancing poppinjays and are occasionally pleasantly surprised when they manage to do something right from time to time....and we allow foreigners to join in the chorus of disapproval, usually nodding in sad agreement when we're told that Brown or Major is/was useless or Blair was slimey etc
