Oh, yes, Brother Curtis, maybe we Americans have some class. It's one thing for us to bicker among ourselves, it's quite another for an outsider to call our leaders "chimps." We Americans have more class than to call ignorant names to our supposed allies. Hey, Matt, maybe you need to don a powdered wig so you can learn some manners and learn to be more genteel.

You hit the nail on the head.

I think the whole world should learn to speak Cockney Rhyme. Then. they would spend half their time trying to figure out what they are saying and would leave t'other bloke alone.

In Canada, we don't mind any country having their say. Just don't try to run us and we will get along fine.

I still smile when I see a replay of Mr. Bush talking about the right hand not knowing what the left is doning, whilst holding up the wrong hand.....I really enjoy stand up comedians. I might add, he does seem like a decent bloke on a personal level, and I should be pleased to meet him in person.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Matt, spend some time praying for your leaders as Scripture commands, and you won't have time to insult them.

Also...if your argument for insulting those in leadership is "well, the other side does it"...that's an extremely poor rationale. We as believers should be above the fray. And just because some do wrong with Obama, doesn't justify your doing the same with Bush, or your own leaders there.

So our leaders are above criticism? That's a very dangerous tack to take, my friend. Down that road lies totalitarianism, Nuremberg Rallies and Cults of Personality...thank you but no.

Why don't you just apologize for insulting some of us instead of trying to wiggle out of it? Nobody is saying we can't be critical of policies, but calling our leaders "chimps" and "idiots" is on a personal level and rather boorish and childish.

This thread is not about G.W. Bush, anyway, it is about the sitting President. So let's get back on topic or it will be closed. I am giving you an opportunity to apologize for insulting us on this side of the pond before closing the thread.

And down the other road lies believers calling the very people they should be praying for ugly names.

There is a middle road. Criticize policies and ideas all you want. That's not what you were doing. You were insulting them...belittling them...these "chimps" and "idiots" are created in the image of God.

This has become a pet peeve of mine. Now that Obama is elected, Christians think they have the right to call him names merely because the liberals have been calling Bush names for years. In fact, there was a poster, he hasn't posted in this thread yet, who actually said this very thing. I thought we (Christians) would rise above that, but I haven't seen any evidence of it.

Maybe it's a cultural difference that lets you think you have the right (for lack of a better term) to criticize and insult Bush. But, I'm pretty sure you don't have the right to insult those who voted for him.

OK. How about President zero ?

I can pull up several examples in the N/T of saints calling leaders animal names.

The moderators NEVER edited out the animal name calling directed at conservatives, and they start it for liberals, then they prove there is a bias, and this board becomes useless to me.

I'm listening to a Chicago area radio station and they're replaying Obama talking to some troops from Illinois and searching for a Sox fan and Obama was just called "President White Sox Meatball".

It's not secret that Bush was not a polished speaker. But truth be told, he is considerably brighter than most, including you, give him credit for. Calling him an idiot is, quite frankly, idiotic. It shows a lack of judgment on your part, Matt. It shows a lack of ability to fairly judge people. You are allowing your misguided English sensitivities to drive you thinking. That's not a virtue.

And why is that? I assume you are not speaking of Jesus' death. If your argument is that it was the world he grew up in, I remind you that when previous racists are called "products of their time," we all say that is no reason. The guy was wrong. There are not grounds for what he said. It was stupid and inaccurate.

Overall, there was nothing remarkable. It was, by comparison, a fairly poor speech, both in terms of rhetoric and delivery. It was petty and trite. It did the very things it condemned, by playing cards of fear, attack, and division, in spite of saying the time for that was over. He had an opportunity yesterday to cast a good vision for the future, and he failed miserably. He did manage to play the race card repeatedly, reminding us that King's dream of judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin is still a ways off, primarily because people of color will not allow themselves to be judged by the content of their character.

Overall, it was not particularly impressive. It was sad.

OK: full and frank apology - I overstepped the mark and have behaved in a boorish, crass and insulting manner today, to your last President and in particular to Rippon. It's no secret that I'm no fan of Bush but my comments crossed the line of decency. No excuse - but a reason perhaps: I've had a lousy day (in particular my little girl has been ill and that's been a great worry). I unreservedly withdraw my 'chimp' and 'idiot' references. Sorry for derailing Roger's thread too.

[ETA - the apology's been longer coming than I'd have liked because my computer's been maddeningly slow this evening (it's 9pm over here)]
