Why is a two day suspention approprate punishment for calling another child a racial slur?

When you call somebody a racial slur it hurts them deep. People are proud of there ancestors their country of origin. It is also not something they can do anything about. If I make fun of your hair do you can change it, you can not change the color of your skin.

So what is the result of continued racial name calling. HATE. I can prove it over and over in history and in the news right now.

Hate leads to violence, especaly in immature kids who have not learned to deal with their emotions. So you can not treat incidents like this as "just kids being kids" incidents like this over and over left unchecked lead to incidents like Colombine.

Two days suspention is an appropriate punishment.

C'mon SB, how are you supposed to know that Mexicans are not the only Spanish people in the world? That is a very weak excuse, one that justifies what your son said, btw. I don't know who looks worse, you or him. Children are a reflection of their parents.

The school is "setting PC booby traps"? What nonsense! It is called common RESPECT and courtesy. Would your son have called little miss "Sally white girl" stupid American? I think not. He showed his true colors the moment "stupid Mexican" left his mouth. Just what are you teaching this good little "Southern Gentleman"? If I were you I would think about it long and hard. He was suspended, and rightfully so, for using a racial slur, especially since his own mother does not see it as anything other than name calling. Maybe the school would have used a less stringent punishment if the parent of the offender would acknowledge the seriousness of the offense. Sad indeed. I mean we are talking about a 13 year old here, not an elementary school kid.

I have no sympathy for parents who justify this type of behavior by saying "he was at his limit, or he didn't know better". Yes, the girl was wrong, as well, but as it has been pointed out two wrongs don't make a right. That should be evident to a Christian. I will definitely be praying for your family.

I've been trying to think why a school might react so strongly and I have come up with one reason: safety. Like it or not there are words, expressions, and even tones of voice that can be as explosive as yelling "fire" in a theater. When we are angry, we often say the worst and not exactly what we wish we would say. Now would be a good time for the young man to learn to choose words carefully, even when angry, for a variety of reasons: his repuation, his witness, his own personal safety.

Much worse than a two day suspension can happen over even a percieved racial slur.

You're saying that the suspension may have been for his own protection?

Not so much in the sense that they felt they should get him out of the school or else, but more in the way that they come down hard to minimize such talk in order to avoid racial violence.

Then perhaps he should be suspended for as many days as it takes to ensure that those who can not manage their violent tendencies are able to control themselves. The penalty should not necessarily be related to the infraction but rather to the emotional status of the offended group. Thus, if he's in an environment where people can accept an apology and move on, he should get a warning but if he's in an environment of oversensitive folks with violent tendencies then he may need to be suspended for 10,15,20 days or perhaps indefinitely until everyone's emotions have been placated.

It is simple as this. Racial hate unchecked causes violence. This suspention was the schools way interviene early into the situation.

The suspention was good for several reasons. The boy needs to learn his statements are unacceptable. The girl deserves justice. And this kind of behavior needs to be stoped before it turn violent.

It as simple as this. Those who choose to resolve their conflicts with violence are solely responsible for their own actions.

I agree, a person who uses violence is responsable for their actions.

But does that mean that we should incite violence?

The kids who shot up the Colombine School are soley responsable for their actions. But alot of familys are suffering. To bad it could not have been prevented.

Two days suspension is too much for a first time offense of this nature. Punishment could have been handled by in school discipline measures.

    I consider it overkill.

Yes. Words are hurtful and if everyone got two days suspension for the things they called me in school and yes, the things that I called them back...well there wouldn't have been much schooling goin on due to absences. Apologies and forgiveness can be just as educational and important to a child's growth as overreacting sentences. In this instance, we are teaching the victim how to best be a victim and that if someone offends her with words, then they must pay to the fullest extent possible. It contributes nicely to our current overly litigious society.

Colombine is far more complex to try to simplify it and equate it to this scenario being discussed. This is a 13 year old boy who called a girl a name with racial overtones. This is not Colombine or the glove does not fit kind of drama.

How do you know that this is not the seed, the begining of a future Colombine.

Or more likely, maybe if the girl felt that nothing was going to be done to protect her she would of gone home and told her big brother to get revenge for her. Her big brother meets SBs little gentelman at the school yard and kicks his teeth in. (I have seen this sinerio when I was in school)

Even if it was not a full on Colombine the suspention may have prevented school violence.

I LOL at "racial overtones" He called her a "stupid mexican" there is no overtone. It was a straight out racial slur.

Yes, unfortunately schools are having teach children what their parents do not. At some point children have to learn that racism is wrong, racial slurs are wrong, and they will not be tolerated, period. This is not about the girl or what she thought. This is about the school having to teach the kid a lesson the parents did not. If the school tolerates a racial slur from one student because he was "provoked" then they have to tolerate racial slurs from other students who feel provoked. C'mon lets be reasonable. If the parent won't even recognize the seriousness of the situation what makes you think a slap on the wrist will make the boy do so?

How exactly you claim it was only "racially overtoned" I will never understand. The boy was purposefully TRYING to insult the girl. That is obvious from his mother's posts. He felt provoked. She belittled him. He responded to her in the only way he knew that would belittle her like she did to him. Why else would he have lumped Mexican in with stupid? He did not like the fact that this "Mexican", (in HIS eyes), made him feel stupid. Why else would have used Mexican at all?

This should be a lesson to all parents. It has nothing to do with being PC. As Christians we need to show RESPECT for ALL people. The things we say around our children just may end up coming back to bite us. SB you may have never called a Hispanic person "stupid Mexican", but your son learned it somewhere. Maybe your political beliefs about illegal immigration, (not that I know what they are), influenced him? Who knows with kids, but at 13 he should know there are a variety of different Hispanics in America. As parents, and more importantly as Christians, we need to make sure we teach our children decency and respect. How can your son be a "light" if he offends? How will he learn not to offend if you justify the comment, (not the name-calling), as being extreme PC'ism?
