    It was added for political reasons so that we could acknowledge something that Soviet citizens could not.

    It was added because we knew who was ultimately at the head of nation and who was responsible for our freedom. On the hells of World War people had a renewed appreciation for the source of our blessings and the protector of them. He was acknowledged at the very beginning of our nation and should forever be so. He was acknowledged again, but only briefly, following 9/11/2001 but now we're busy again trying to push Him out of site.

    You can believe that was the reason it was added if you so desire. No one will force you to face reality on this subject. :)

    When Eisenhower signed the bill in 1954 authorizing the change he said:

    "
    These words [“under God”] will remind Americans that despite our great physical strength we must remain humble. They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man, and upon which our way of life is founded."

    I think I'll choice to believe what he said was an honest reflection of how he felt about it.
