Please note that according to the Baptist Board User Agreement and/or BB Posting Rules no threads dealing with human sexuality will be allowed in an open public forum. If you feel the need to discuss any subject matter dealing with human sexuality the proper and only permissible place to do so is in either the BB Private Men's Forum or the BB Private Women's Forum depending on the gender of the person starting the thread.

    Yours in Christ,
    Lady Eagle,

    They are not:

    • a difference of opinion.

    • a difference of interpretation of facts.
For example, I am a Republican in more or less the mold of Theodore Roosevelt. My father (who grew up on a farm during the Depression) is a New Deal Democrat. We have differences of opinion and interpretations of facts. Neither one of us thinks the other is a liar.

Slander (from the American Heritage Dictionary):

    • Oral communication of false statements injurious to a person's reputation.
    • A false and malicious statement or report about a person.
Further, Slander is verbal\oral. Libel involves defamation in other forms of communication, for example: the written word, images, or here on the Board.

    So, Slander is not:

    • Asking for proof of a statement.
    • Asking how an opinion was arrived at.
    • Responding to a comment based on a poster's previous posts on the same or other relevant threads.
    Please consider this from Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defamation

In my experience, truth like chlorine bleach is the best for dealing with the stain of libel or slander.

There are times when the foolishness of the fool is so self evident that declaration of truth is unnecessary and the hydrogen peroxide is not needed to remove the blood stains.

However, slander is a difficult problem from which to build a defense much less overcome.

For instance. How can one who is slandered as racist, defend against that statement.

Just proclaiming the truth, is often not enough.

Often public figures are slandered with no recourse of defense available.

Sure, the truth is readily available, but slander is more enticing and more easily accompanied by other demeaning statements; the evil heart doesn't want to hear good except it be accompanied by an evil report. For example, the person saying, "Joe did a good job putting Henry in his place by calling him a racist."

"I never did," doesn't answer the question, "Did you stop beating your wife?"

The titillating will always attract the crowd, even without cause and the truth be known.

The word troll is a loaded one. As noted in the OP, it has an official definition on this board and is actionable. Merely, stating a contrary opinion is not trolling.

REPORT trolls. Merely accusing some one does nothing. Further, the mere posting of contrary opinions does not constitute posting

With the new format, it is more difficult to see how many pages there are to a given thread. So, I am making explicit the practice I've instituted over the last few months.

Instead of just page counts, I am now looking at reply counts. When a thread gets to around 125+ replies, it becomes a cadidate for closure.

Please be advised of this Admin Team decision:

From this point on (check the time stamp of this post), threads seeking comment on editorial and op-ed pieces are to be posted in the Politics Forum and not the News Forum.

If an OP meeting these criteria does get posted in News Forum, it will be moved to Politics by on of the Team.

    An update:

For the last six months or so, with the Admin Teams concurrence, I have closed threads when they reach 135 or so posts. Mind you, I am not all that efficient. So, if I go to Costco or Sunday Services, some threads grow like Topsy before I can post the Six Hour Warning.

I believe six hours is enough time for folks to post their finishing thoughts. However, I understand there are still points to be discussed. So, folks are free to start a new thread dealing with those points. Unless, the thread as been closed with prejudice.

To lower the rhetorical heat, the Admin Council has decided:
Henceforth, derogatory nicknames will not be allowed when referring to either public figures or fellow Board members.

In the spirit of Colossians 4:6

Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

The use of dims when referring to the Democrats and or their party will be discontinued.
