Would say for serious studies in the bible, stick with more literal versions, such as nasb/Nkjv/Kjv versions, but if one has come to salvation point w/o anyawareness/knowledge of the bible, would start with say Niv/Nlt, and go after awhile into more literal versions!

have to factor into this the understanding and bible literacy ones bring to reading/studying the bible!

In the new 2013 book entitled One Bible, Many Versions by Dave Brunn,
six pages of examples are given where Dave Brunn maintained that the NASB has a "thought for thought" rendering while another translation has a more "essentially literal rendering" (pp. 24-29).

Here are four examples from the ninety or so found on those six pages:

    1 Sam. 27:1
David said in his heart [NKJV]
    David said to himself [NASB]

    Job 31:18
    From my mother's womb [NKJV]
    From infancy [NASB]

    Jer. 38:4
    weakens the hands [NKJV]
    discouraging [NASB]

    Micah 7:5
Guard the doors of your mouth [NKJV]
    Guard your lips [NASB]

    "If now it pleases you"

    2 Chron. 15:7

    Job 7:17
"That you are concerned about him"

    Job 16:9
    "Glares at me"

    Job 27:3
