I think that's a shame, because the ESV seems to me to be well suited for corporate settings.

Do you think that few people in your area have the ESV because of lack of availability (it just isn't sold in very many Christian stores in the area) or because of preference?

rbell, I've noticed that NIV still seems to be "king" around here. I was sincerely hoping when our current pastor came that would change as he preaches from NASB. I remember the grumbling about 10 years about when Lifeway moved from quoting KJV to quoting NIV. I'm sure that's the reason NIV has such a strong hold here.

Keith, I'm the only one that I know that's got an ESV. Others may have it and not carry it or talk about having one. I need to ask around tomorrow. I figured it had more to do with the actual need for another version.

If I were a Crtical Text man I suspect that I would use the ESV.

I was led to the Lord through the Scriptures as found in the NASV. The NKJV is an excellent translation also. I haven't read the ESV enough to have an honest opinion.

While the 1995 NASV is a little more wooden than those others, I am told it's one of the most accurate English versions there is. The NKJV is a little less accurate, I am told, but it's a smoother "read" than the NASV.

I believe God has preserved His word in English in those three versions as well as in the KJV, Geneva, & some others.

I use the ESV for my personal study and the bulk of my preaching. I started using it in Seminary when Dr. Mohler told us about it in a theology class i took under him.
Next is the NASB which is what i was using for the most part prior to using the ESV. I still use it to preach at times, but not too often.
And third is the NKJV, for no real reason. I do like it, no problems with it.

In fact, i have no real problems with any of these versions...they all help me in my studies and my preaching.

I never really cared for the NKJV and instead used the NASB. But I recently picked up a copy of the ESV and like it very much. It will probably make the switch to the ESV.

I love my NKJV, while I like also the NASB. I have not yet looked at the ESV. I like the NKJV, because of the updated English language and also because those who are following in the congregation with their KJV can stay right with me.

    1 Timothy 6:5

"from such withdraw thyself" is dropped. The Bible doctrine of
separation is affected here. We are to withdraw from teachers
who are destitute of the truth. And from those who Drop the ball oft!

The biblical doctrine of separation isn't affected by that at all, William. The biblical doctrine of separation is clear in many verses in the modern translations such as Rom 16:17-18, 2 Thess 3, 2 Peter, Jude, 2 and 3 John, etc.

In obedience to those passages, we are required to withdraw fellowship from people like you because you teach a doctrine contrary to the truth of Scripture. Until you repent and accept biblical doctrine, we are not supposed to fellowship with you. And that is in the KJV, as well as all modern versions.

I don't like the way the NASB translates "porneia" in many instances simply as "immorality."

I also think the NASB tends to be a little more dynamic in the OT than the NKJV.

Since porneia means immorality, what is the problem?

    It doesn't simply mean immorality.
    It means illicit sexual intercourse.
That's not as broad a definition as immorality.

I especially don't like the translation to "immorality" in passages like Mat 19:9. I don't think Jesus was saying one could divorce his wife if she cheated at cards but rather if she committed illicit sexual intercourse.

I agree with everything you said, minus the ranking. I'd rank them as:
    1. NASB
    2. ESV
    3. NKJV

I use the ESV the most but that is mostly because it's what we use at church. I really enjoy the NASB and NKJV. Of the two, NASB, NKJV I like how the NKJV reads a lot. It has the familiarity of the KJV but yet you can read it easily.

So you think the Bible only forbids illicit sexual intercourse? The word actually refers to sexual immorality of all kinds. Therefore "sexual intercourse" is too limiting for what the Bible is referring to. So some couple who gets frisky and stops short of intercourse is still guilty of porneia. They are immoral.

First, it's not a matter of everything the Bible forbids, it's a matter of what the word "porneia" means.
Second, it's not really a matter of what i think the word means, it's how Strong's defines it.

I have no problems with calling it sexual immorality as in the ESV. Sexual immorality is still different than general immorality.

Would you say that Mat 19:9 teaches a husband can divorce his wife if she is an immoral card cheater?
