Well, just found out that for the third year in a row, one of the local baptist churches here in my town will not be having a service on Easter Sunday.

The pastor goes on vacation that week.

[IMG] [IMG] That is nothing but plain laziness and disrespect for Jesus Christ by the Church and it's pastor. Shame, Shame, Shame on them for their worldliness.

Is it possible that this pastor has 'issues'?
Beyond that...I guess he's never heard of 'sheep-stealing'!!!

I am not quite so sure. My husband and I helped in a mission church for several years. We and another couple had to carefully coordinate any absences so that SOMEONE would be there to unlock the doors, turn up the furnace, put out the chairs, turn on the lights, take the cover off the piano, put out the bulletins that I had already folded.
The original post tells us nothing about this individual church. Maybe there were a number of years that every other regular attender was somewhere else at Easter. I haven't attended church on Easter at my own church for probably fifteen years. We are always with our extended family at a different church.

Besides, in MANY IFB and other types of Baptist churches, Easter Sunday is consciously treated no differently than any other Sunday.

My own SBC church is big enough that it always has a Sunday morning service, but at least a couple of times a year on different holidays, Sunday night or Wednesday night services will be cancelled. Our big Thanksgiving service is always the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving, and then no service on Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

There are probably a few details here we are not given. Plus I doubt that there are a lack of other churches to attend in the first poster's area on Easter morning. [IMG]

That aint a church. Its a social club.

I found out a good way to tell if a church is worth attending or not. Sit in the parking lot while folks are filing in and look to see how many people are carrying Bibles. If you dont see any put your car in drive and look elsewhere. When my wife and I first moved down here to Florida we found that to be a good barometer.

I'm a little surprised by the responses here.

    Aren't baptist churches independent?

I thought that baptists make a big point about not being under the law.

If this local independent called out body of believers don't care if they have service on Easter Sunday, why should you?

Jude, this pastor does understand about sheep stealing. He lost a good chunk of his membership when the baptist church in the next town over built a rollerblade park for their kids. Kids could only use it if their family was offically a member of that church. Nice way to pick a church, huh?

Are they held accountable to God's Word or to the tradition of men?

I never bring my bible to church. I always use a pew bible. I didnt realize that I could be contributing to making our barometer look bad.

Shame on you! Would play a round of golf w/o bringing your clubs? What if a plumber came to your house to fix a leaky pipe and said, " I didnt bring my tools, I'll just use yours."
It just shows indifference to the Word of God. My guess is that youve probably never read through it one time.

Actually people using the pew Bible is not uncommon nor is it wrong. How many people in the book of Acts carried their Bible to church? What would your guess be?

None. Nor would anyone until years after the reformation. So much for sola scriptura prior to the reformation.

I just find this hard to believe. Trying2understand, can you share a link or some reference.

Only Baptist church I know that DOESN'T have Sunday morning service is a "7th Day Baptist" and they worship on Saturday every week.

Well, to me its not that big of a deal. Its just one day. Its not like God wakes up on Sunday morning and takes attendance. I celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ 365 days a year. Just take that Sunday morning off and sleep in, [IMG] , or visit another group of believers that morning. [IMG]

You'll be with the same body of Christ anyway. ;)

    Theres only one.

If I remember correctly I think our pastor called off one of our Easter services(morning or evening, cant remember) last year or 2 years ago for some reason or another. It wasnt really that big of a thing. We just went to my in-laws church for that service. It was kind of a nice change of pace.

    God bless,

    Mike

Sorry can't give you a link; got it from a friend of mine who would know... he's the pastor. [IMG]

BTW, why is this hard to believe?

Isn't this church independent and free from having to answer to you guys?

Aren't they no longer under the law and not required to do works like going to church?

Isn't Easter Sunday just another day?

Can't he keep the Sabbath at the beach? Is it necessary to be in church?

(BTW, most baptists that I know personally, don't bother with church while away from home or on vacation.)

The responses of shock, anger & disbelief tells me that perhaps baptists don't really believe their own stuff concerning the law and works. [IMG]
