Just noticed this thread (Nomenclature) started by TC, & shut down before any replies!
I was looking forward to discussions here cause I get totally lost with all the deep(?) theological arguments on either side.
I was hoping for some simple explanations of each stand, but alas, it died!
    Could somebody explain?? :Thumbsdown:Thumbsdown
    Thanks!!

FTR, I identify with th "B" portion of TC's breakdown, BUT, and this is a very definite BUT, I can see examples in scripture of the "A" side also, but more the exception than the rule!

It wasn't "shut down". I made it a sticky and closed it. It now resides at the top of the forum thread list.

    OK I am a Mugwump.

I have spent decades torn in the "tension" between the Sovereignty of God and the Responsibility of Man.

So much so and for sanity's sake I gave up without entering into any of the standard labeled venues.

Actually it is a good place to be because whether the sign outside the church uses the word "Grace" or "Free-will" I can go in and have and enjoy fellowship.
Assuming of course the fruit of the Spirit is there and I have found it to be so in either case.

    Right here, I guess.

Here again are my suggestions to unmuddy the waters.
I will entertain any additions or subtractions from either position to ensure I am being fair to both sides of the discussion.

Please. No blasphemy. No name-calling. No telling others what they believe.

If you are an "A" you may only suggest modification of definition "A."

If you are a "B" you may only suggest modification of definition "B."

Once we agree on the definitions, then a discussion may ensue regarding the pros and cons of each position.

The precise and quite fitting appellation would be Gomarists:

    The Gospel Coalition

So, what does your response mean? Do you accept definitions A and B as working definitions for the purpose of discussion or are you suggesting a change regarding B? If so, what change are you proposing?

Why is definition "B" filled with multiple explanations while definition "A" is direct and uses the word "elect" to cover explanations?

For consistencies sake, why isn't definition "B":
The "General" Redemptionists believe Christ Atoned for all on the cross but only those who place their faith in Him will be saved.

    Alternatively defintion A could be:
The "Particular" Redemptionists believe that Christ Atoned only for His peculiar people, the elect, on the cross, and all of those that God has regenerated, or gifted with faith, or enabled their ability to believe on him, will be saved.

Okay, we have a suggested edit of "B."

"The "General" Redemptionists believe Christ Atoned for all on the cross but only those who place their faith in Him will be saved."

Do the "B"s all agree to that edit?

I don't know that I fall into either camp. Or both. Or something. Jesus died on the cross for everyone but his atonement is only efficacious for the elect.

    That would be option "A."

I guess I would describe my beliefs as:

"Christ's atonement is efficacious only for the elect. The elect are those who have placed their faith in Christ."
