Since I do not know her I cannot tell you what her sins are.
I would deal with her as follows;.

If the majority of people today jumped off a cliff to their death, would you say that it the thing to do?

I am not so foolish to posture such a statement.

Scarlett, I believe you are of sound mind and counselling. Keep going, girl.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Why not? After all, you are advocating the mindset of "go with the flow; get with the times"

The difference is that you know the drugs causes you issues. In the case where there is no outside stimuli or inward tumor it is a sin issue.

Amy prove it instead of adding to scripture. Everything we see the writings deal with problems through confession, not drugs.

I never said this or postured such a thought. You are lacking in reading and understanding. One of the reasons I cut back contributing to the board. Too many fools who think they know all.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Jim, God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. There is nothing new under the sun. The time period you live in has nothing to do with your belief or lack there of.

Oh, my. I wouldn't threaten my church-sister with anything. For the most part she's docile and compliant. She sometimes has to be "reined in" when she is euphoric and sometimes doesn't come to church when she is struggling with an episode. I see no need to threaten her.

This type of counseling that you are describing could work well some. But not all. That's my only point.

God's word never fails. Like I said about her since I have no information on her I cannot tell you about her. She may have a tumor. However if there is no physical evidence for her condition then there is sin someplace.

It could be that she simply does not want to deal with her sin as we are told to, but there would be sin of some sort. Every person in scripture that shows mental issues all had prior or present sin.

Well, if anything this thread has presented an excellent taste of why so many who advocate for nouthetic counseling are often unreasonable to deal with, and for no good reason.

Not all psychological problems are spiritual problems.

Jay Adams and his group is wrong on this and a lot of other issues. Frankly hardcore proponents of nouthetic counseling are pretty dangerous people as they advocate methods and approaches that will end up harming people rather than helping them. We have several staff who specialize in counseling and keep a Christisn clinical psychologist on retainer for our members. Some of the stories of abuse or neglect of patients through nouthetic practioneers are startling. Granted this isn't wholesale but it is troubling.

It might be best to note that we can believe in the sufficiency of Scripture while also recognizing it's inherent limitations. Nouthetic counseling ignores theological reasonability in advocating a hermeneutic devoid of actual biblical attachment. I can go on but this should stand as a fairly decent reply for now.

If I remember right the average age of death this time last century was about 40. How many would trade the meds they had then for what they have today? I know I would have died a long time ago if it were not for certain drugs.

    Oh, but wait...

Didn't Jim1999 say we are living in 2012 and not OT or NT times? How dare us want to tell someone to seek out the old paths and walk therein when we have mind altering drugs that will keep them at bay?

Who needs the Scripture today, that was given many centuries ago. Today we have the DSM-IV, tomorrow DSM-V.

Unless there is brain damage from an accident or a tumor sin is what needs to be dealt with and drugs never deal with sin.

    Scripture has inherent limitations? Really??

I guess Paul was lying when he wrote:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Paul said we can be perfect and thoroughly furnished, yet you say it has limitations.

I'll stick with Paul on this one.

Nouthetic counseling is a great method of counseling for those situations where it is needed.

Drugs are a great method of dealing with physical issues to address brain/chemical/hormonal issues.

Both are important and a good "doctor" will know when to use either one or both.

I have to say that I find those who are most vocal against something are those who struggle with just that thing. I have thought about this much in the last number of days since this topic came up....
