A co-worker said that this chapter talks about abortion in the Bible, where it was okay to perform. I immediatley said no and that it was talking about a woman who defiled herself with another man and the husband took her to the priest because he was jealous. So the priest gave her bitter water to drink and if she was telling the truth, she could go ahead and concieve seed, but if she were to lie about it, her belly would swell and her thighs would rot. Basically a form of a lie detector if you will.

What are your thoughts on this chapter?

Nothing to do with "abortion". It was a miraculous intervention of God to assist in discerning right/wrong in moral cases in His theocracy.

    And NOT for today!!

The only Scripture that I am aware of that mentions pre-birth abortions is Exodus 21. Moses gave instructions for dealing abortions wherein a man hurt a woman and caused her baby to be prematurly born. The punishment in such cases was to fit the harm done to the child.

If no harm was done, the guilty man would only pay a fine. If the woman or baby was harmed, the same harm would be done to the man. This is where the famous words of justice originate:

"life for life, eye for ye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, woudn for wound, stripe for stripe."

And this was talking about an unintentional abortion! In light of this passage is it any wonder that the same people who deny God's principles of justice - "eye for eye" and "life for life" - justify the murder of unborn infants?
