I'm mixed on this one- I was (am not) not a fan of NAFTA. But once it became law we were bound to live up to the agreement.

To my limited knowledge, the only major part of the agreement that has not been implemented by the USA has been the trucking agreement, well actually it WAS implemented by Bush after much foot-dragging amidst the hue and cry of the Trucker Unions, but now Obama has withdrawn it- and the only reason for it is as a political move to appease the Unions who threw their weight behind him.

There is a right and a wrong way to modify a treaty and this is the wrong way.

It's great news if you are an American truck driver. Also, how did we survive all those years when Mexican truck drivers were not allowed to drive in the U.S.?

Be honest. You only care because it involves President Obama.

As I said on the other thread, this is the one thing he has done that I agree with. What good are treaties when the other government won't crack down on illegal drug smuggling? Honor on treaties should apply to all sides, not just us. Do you have any idea how many drugs are smuggled across our borders in those Mexican unsafe 18-wheelers rolling on our highways, endangering motorists because of inferior safety standards? Neither do I, but I bet it's a bunch.

All unions should be made illegal. They are one of the main reasons we are no longer competitive in the world market. But I didn't realize you supported NAFTA.

If NAFTA presented a physical threat to the citizens of this nation then yes, I would break it in a NY minute. We shouldn't have to sell an "honor" speech to the victims family.

If you make a promise to do something that is wrong, ie steal, murder etc then the responsible thing to do is to put a stop to it. And decide be more careful to not make bad promises in the future. The result will be that your integrity and will be compromised and questioned in the future. But what you do not do is continue to do that which should never have been promised to begin with.

Allowing those trucks on our highways with different standards was a bad promise. It allows others to profit under much easier standards than our own and has the potential to hurt our own trucking industry. This was a necessary correction. We need to be more careful in the future.

I agree Rev, it's better to admit you made a mistake and back out than to save face in a self destructive policy. We're trillions in debt, let them sue us.

Union fearmongering tactics have been effective, however...

    http://mexicotrucker.com/wall-street-journal-mexican-truck-stop

Earlier this year, the DOT analyzed the safety record of Mexican carriers in the U.S. from 2003-2006. It looked at the rate in which trucks received an “out-of-service” designation by DOT inspectors targeting companies with the worst records. The out-of-service rate for U.S. trucks was 23.5%, compared to a rate for trucks from Mexico of 21.29%. Mexican short-haul trucks operating in the border zone also had a better record than the U.S. trucks, with an out-of-service rate of 22.5%.

Mexican carriers that have been allowed to send trucks beyond the restricted U.S. border zone in recent years have a better safety record than their U.S. counterparts, federal transportation officials said this week.

Not sure what you're trying to say Carpro, what does the union have to do with the Mexican truckers safety record? It either is or it isn't true.

I see... Are you saying you're in favor of the Mexican trucks on US highways? I know you showed some stats saying they have a better safety record, are you in favor of continuing this practice?

What he is saying is that the US must honor it's treaties.

If Obama doesn't want Mexican trucks to enter our country then he should amend the treaty - not break it.

Breaking it only decreases our standing in the world. Why make treaties with the US if we don't honor them?

Breaking this treaty in this way will cause Mexico to retaliate with higher tariffs on goods being exported from the US into Mexico - resulting in fewer exports which we cannot afford at this time because we are already in a recession.

Finally, did not Obama run for office in part based on his ability to "restore the damaged standing of the US"? Didn't we need Obama because the world so hated the US because of Bush and his policies?

Does breaking a trade agreement improve or harm our standing with the world?

    Thany you, Capro.

I must admit though that it can be very frustrating attempting to have a serious conversation with someone who either plays the fool just to avoid having to concede a point... or is completely void of reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.

It happens over and over with a couple of participants on this forum.

Not sure how you relate this small action that most of the world could careless about with decreasing our standing in the world but you go for it. If water boarding and holding prisoners without charge didn't decrease our standing then denying a Mexican trucker access to our highways sure won't do it.

Mexico economically retaliating against the US??? You can';t seriously believe Mexico is in a position to play this game with the US?

Denying Mexican truckers access to our highways would do neither. With all the things going on in the world things like this are only on the republican radar. The rest of the world realizes we have far greater things to be concerned about.

However, giving American truckers work in this time of economic catastrophe will help improve our economic condition and will increase Government tax revenues to help pay for some of Obama's spending. You guys criticize him for spending the money then criticize him for trying to alleviate the debt. The debt is there and you call it generational theft if we pass it to our children then you don't want us to stimulate revenues to pay it off...

This is why you guys are known as the party of NO and why you are loosing membership fast. At one point you will need to commit to a pathway out of this mess or live with the feeling that no one's listening to you. You can't just complain about everything and offer no solutions beyond tax cuts.

That's a new low even for you Targus. I guess when you have no other argument you must turn to the personal attack. Isn't that the other page of the GOP club book? The one opposite twist all facts and propose tax cuts.

    Oh please, spare me.

This is exactly what I am talking about when I refer to critical thinking skills.

To say that someone "plays the fool" is not to accuse someone of being a fool - hence it is not a personal attack.

It means that that person is pretending not to understand the arguement being made by the other party - usually due to the lack of an effective counter arguement.

    If the shoe fits...
