WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama is urging Congress to postpone the Feb. 17 switch from analog to digital television broadcasting, arguing that too many Americans who rely on analog TV sets to pick up over-the-air channels won't be ready.

In a letter to key lawmakers Thursday, Obama transition team co-chair John Podesta noted that the Commerce Department has run out of money for coupons to subsidize digital TV converter boxes for consumers.

Just nifty! Now the government has to make sure you can watch TV. Just how much power do they really want? After all that is what all this bail out is about. Getting more power.

Obama has to do this, because the vast majority of the people who won't be ready for this switch are those who do not have cable and only have local channels - i.e., the 3 networks and PBS. And Obama knows well the powerful propaganda those channels provide on his behalf.

Congress is already involved - they told broadcasters that they had to make the change

Obama just wants to give folks more of a chance in these financially strapped days.

In my opinion they should get rid of the entire mandate to switch to digital. Let the free market work itself out. That the government is mandating broadcasters go to digital is just silly to begin with.

So much for expanding cell phone band width. One part of the economy that is not hurting and they want to halt it's progress.

Ahhhhhhh, Now isn't that just precious. He wants to make it easier. [IMG] Hey, I hear an echo, "I feel your Pain", William Blythe Clinton 1992.

Yea, that's it, Obama's Presidency is the "echo" of the Bill Clinton Presidency. All his appointments mirror the slick one to a T. And abortion will be funded out of my hard work. Lets Talk about giving the unborn a chance.

People have had a year to get ready, if anyone were really concerned they be giving people things they really need, like food. The government has paid out how much money now for those coupons for the converter box and if it is postponed then they just gave it away for nothing.
We have several channels here who've already gone digital, and I am sure they aren't the only ones in the country.

I am always amazed how some people can turn any discussion into one on abortion.

Digital TV is not related in any way to that topic. Please don't derail this thread.

After the switch, many folks who get analog tv just fine, won't get over the air channels at all. If they got snowy reception, they likely won't get anything. DTV is either all or nothing. You get a channel clearly, or not at all.

And when that happens just watch the mad rush for those digital boxes, coupon or no coupon. If they will kill a WalMart employee for a playstation just wait for the madness of getting the next fix for their TV addiction.

Sow what if people cannot watch TV? Why must the government fund it?

Why did the government stick their noses in and mandate this change to start with? Why are they robbing the people of the privilege to watch television?

Sense the inception of broadcast radio, the gov has regulated the air waves. The cell phone and it's rapid and popular use needs more room for expansion. The transition of tv from analog to digital was supposed to be the best for both technologies. High definition could not be achieved through an analog signal and tv makers wanted to move their digital technology in that direction. So both technologies had to get the government's nod to accomplish these goals.

So, the almighty state has the power to deprive people of something they have enjoyed for generations and make people pay for the change?

And people are upset because the new president wants to give people more time to get ready for the change?

Tough luck people - we are the government and we are here to help you!

    Nice scheme.

As an outsider, I get the impression that Mr. Obama can't win for losing. For the life of me, I don't know, aside from the money and benefits are great, why anyone would want to be president in the USA or Prime Minister in Canada.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I agree - here he tries to give people a break from government imposed hardship and get criticised.
