they do not have to at all. TV is unimportant and not something the tax payers should fund.

But they have had a privilege stolen by an ever intrusive federal government.

    Old News

We in the Wilmington, NC market have already made the transfer (several months ago). We were a test market. For the most part there has been no changes. TVs that are digital ready pick up channels without the device. The device is only needed for those tvs that are not digital ready. Interestingly enough, when cable goes out the new digital service has new channels that I've never seen before. It is interesting.

As for the coupons, they don't pay for the device. The only thing the coupon does is reduce the price. So the government is not buying people tv sets. Rather it is helping people have access to tv by paying for part of the cost of the device. Since the government is requiring the change, I see no problem with the government helping with the cost for those who need it.

Having said that, no matter how far in advanced people are warned about this they will not be ready. There were people around here who thought they were getting digital cable. Of course they were not, but they heard the term "digital" and thats all they heard. Proving once again that many people don't listen to details.

==Be that as it may, it has been funded. So that ship has sailed. Besides, if the government is going to require the switch the government should help pay for the switch. IMO, the switch should never have been required by the government.

As for your claim that tv is not important, how dare you say that? Don't you understand that without a working tv people can't watch "The Price is Right" or "Dancing with the Stars"? Without a working tv, how can they sit on their couches all day watching their favorite programs and allowing their brains turn to mush? How can people know what they are suppose to think unless they have the tv news media to tell them what to think? Of course tv is important! It is very important to those who want to keep the majority of the American people dumb, fat, lazy, and thus under control.

O, much of that last paragraph was sarcasm.

And the government does not generate their own income. We provide it.

Wow, talk about makin' an ol' redneck feel really out of touch!
I guess I'm the only one in the U.S. who has no cell-phone, computer (this one is at work), cable, satellite, X-box, PS3, MP3, blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, etc......
Now ya'll tell me that soon I won't even be able to get the three channels that now come over my rabbit ears (when it's not raining) because the gub'mint wants to change to digital.
    Dang.
Guess I'll just have to make do with going to church, hunting, fishing, golfing, shooting, hiking, and camping, instead of sitting on my watching some ignorant drivel written by a bunch of atheistic, left wing, immoral, and totally unfunny writers with no imagination.
    Dang.

Won't this benefit the Satelite and Cable companies that currently charge additional premiums for optional HD channels? How much did they contribute to Obama's campaign?

There is no law of God or nature that requires without exception that a govt owned business is less efficient than a privately owned business.

 So we've had one guy tie DTV to abortion, and Mitch blames it on people who are concerned about global warming. You boys need to buy another song book...your sad tune is getting tired.

Remember, DTV is not necessarily HD. And as you said, HD is optional. I am skeptical about the DTV transition, however with multicasting, you may get MORE programming over the air via the digital subchannels.

==As Americans, we elect our government and are therefore responsible to pay the taxes our representatives require. The transition should not have been required, that was a mistake, but the thing is already happening. As I pointed out, in the Wilmington N.C. area the switch took place several months ago. Instead of fussing over money already spent maybe we should start electing respresentatives who actually represent the American people instead of various interest groups. This is happening because we keep sending the wrong people to Washington and to the state capitals.
