There's always going to be liars and nitwits who try to capture our attention with outlandish tales.

But where are the fact-checkers in the news media or even someone with a calculator dividing 2,100 by 25?

No one can swim an average of 84 miles per day for 25 days. [IMG]

In fact, I don't believe that anyone can swim 84 miles in one day, period.

And she claimed to do it between 21 minutes per day and 8 hours per day. [IMG]

    What a bunch of hooey!!

The point should be the lack of editing in most every local paper. The "reporters" take every made to them and every wire story at face value. Apparently none of the latest crop of newspaper personnel have the smarts to evaluate statements that involve simple math. None of them have the smarts to ask obvious questions. H. L. Menckin, where are you when we really need you?

My 6th graders and I were working on ratios and proportions and unit rates today. I tried something with them. As we were working, I said, "Oh, by the way, class.....let me tell you something interesting. Last week, it was reported in several newspapers that a woman swam 2100 miles across a portion of one of our oceans in 25 days. She swam about 8 hours per day. Isn't that exciting?"

And then I just went on with the math lesson.

A couple of students raised their eyebrows when I told that story and I could see a smile slowly turn into a frown in a couple more faces. One student took his pencil to a scratch piece of paper and in a few minutes, he interrupted my lesson and said, "Hey....Ms. Kim.....that lady would have to have swam over 10 miles every hour for 8 straight hours for 25 days."

    Then he said, "That's impossible!!"

I just smiled, gave him a piece of Valentine candy, and went with my lesson.

I live for moments like that. It's literally intoxicating.

    I'M ADDICTED TO TEACHING! :flower:
