In 1999, Candidate Bush Attacked Dems on Gas Price at $1.64, Demanded Clinton ‘Jawbone’ OPEC - But Now as Price Heads to $4 Bush Does Nothing

Gas prices have soared this week to a national average of $1.64 a gallon, and to well over $2 a gallon in the Chicago and Milwaukee area, setting off a frenzy of finger-pointing involving the Clinton administration, Congress, oil companies and refineries, and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

In 2000, the Republicans used the spike to $1.64 as a campaign issue to bash the Clinton administration and Democratic candidates in the election that year, especially Al Gore:

In June 2000, Republican politicians urged President Bill Clinton to fire his energy secretary, Bill Richardson. Richardson, Michigan Sen. Rod Grams explained, was presiding over an “energy disgrace.”

What exactly can he do? I'd like to hear a real and legitimate, workable plan, not speculation by people who really have no idea how it really works.
Can he make the oil countries sell for less? You produce a product, you set your price. Thats the way the world functions.
You don't go and buy an item, and demand the store lower it's price to what you want it to be. You pay their price or don't buy.
Gas prices here didn't reach $1.64 until after 911, in the year or so before that we were paying not more then $1.25. When it did reach $1.60 it was proven price gouging, which immediately became illegal.

What did he tell Clinton he should have done? He was extremely critical of Clinton and yet since then, WOW..........

It is simply another example of his being able to cirticize, but having no clue on what to do to prevent a problem. In fact, most of what he has done and not done has made the problem worse. Of course his riches came from oil, so it is to be expected that he would do nothing to possibly keep oil prices low and oil company profits from sailing through the roof.

Specifically name all the alleged attacks on the dems concerning gas prices by Bush.

Oh, and BTW, be careful of foul language on that link.

What can Bush do? Bring the troops home from all over the world. That will cut the speculation on oil.

    Politics as usual.

But then, every effort made by the Bush administration to increase production was killed by democrats.

    Go figure.

You honestly don't remember Bush saying he would "jawbone OPEC?" I know I do, but of course, I'm all grown up.

Honestly, I don't, and if he did, we should have jumped on him for it when it happened. I voted for Gore in 2000, so I obviously wasn't paying much attention......

    I voted for Gore also.

Bush, like most of the others, was just being a politician at the time.

    Bush criticisms of Clinton:

Underwood's remarks followed George W. Bush's criticism of the Clinton administration for putting "our economy and the way of life it supports" at risk by failing to develop a comprehensive energy policy.

In reporting on President Bush's April 25 announcement that he would suspend deposits into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in an effort to reduce rising gasoline prices, numerous news outlets failed to note that Bush had previously criticized both the Clinton administration and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) for proposing to use the reserve to lower prices.

How many references do y'all want. I am surprised that none of the Bush supporters remember his words at that time.

You are correct. For a man who had all the answers in 2000 he sure has not been able to see the implemented in 8 years.

He can't get away from the fact that he is the $100 a barrel president and may be the $200 barrel president.

Not positive here so am open to correction, but did Bush not have a Republican Congress from 2002-2006? I think he also had the House for a couple more years.
