The tragedy at Slapton Sands, Devon, in which hundreds of US servicemen lost their lives rehearsing for the Utah Beach landings, happened 75 years ago today, and is being commemorated locally by this memorial:

    May their memory be eternal

What a terrible day that was. WW2 was a conflict in which we used to lose hundreds of serviceman at a time, not just 4 or 5 as we lose in today's wars. There was the carpet bombing in Normandy where we bombed our own advancing troops, among many others.

    1. Operation Cobra in Normandy, 136 Americans killed.
    2. Incident at Mersa Egypt with 359 Allied troops killed (mostly British) and 560 wounded.
    3. The Allerona Train disaster - 400 British, American and South African POW's killed, bombed by Allied aircraft.
    4. In the Pacific, a Japanese "Hell Ship" taking Allied POW's to Japan was torpedoed by our own submarines with hundreds killed.

I don't know if the citizens of our respective countries could take those kind of casualties in this day and age.

Is this D-Day anniversary what Trump is going to England for?

You are referring to Exercise Tiger . More on this later, suffice to say the results were regretable. They were more a matter of Murphy running wild than anything else.

This should be Trump's last trip to the UK except for visiting his golf course. Let Pence do the ceremonial stuff.
