Donna, one time a woman told me that Jesus had appeared to her. I asked, "How did you know it was Jesus?" Her reply, "Everyone knows what Jesus looks like."

I usually don't argue with these people. I just let them tell their experience. For whatever reason, they seem to believe that they have experienced perhaps a vision. Sometimes, I am sure that they can tell that I am skeptical.

My wise mother used to tell me that one should not try to explain everything that happens logically that many things the human mind cannot comprehend.

I agree that we should be sure to base our beliefs on the scriptures.

The WORST thing we can do is compare ourselves among ourselves. We can get a false sense of security or accomplishment when we view anything we do as "spiritual" in that regard.

"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise."
    2 Cor 10:12

Thats one of my points Bill. If it ain't there it ain't of God.

Dr. Bob, reminds me, we are all susceptiable (sp?) and need to be on guard so we don't think too highly of ourselves because we see the light on any one certain topic and the next guy is still struggling to see it.
Our measure, is not to be measured against each other, but against scripture. We are to be compared not with each other, but the bible.

I agree Donna. What about experience's that seem to be from God telling you something that you can't find scripture for? I know that happens too.
I guess that's the Holy Spirit leading you?

One example.. a couple weeks ago I was sitting in my chair watching a little tv, was not in a good mood at all, tired and wanted to lay down. I was about to get up when I just all of a sudden 'knew' a friend of mine was going to call. I had no doubt at all. I'll call her Jane. I hadn't talked to her in a couple weeks, I had no good reason to think she was about to call me, and I was not in the mood to talk to anyone. I looked at the phone and thought oh man, no I'll just let the answering machine get it. So I left the phone by my chair and went to rest my eyes on the couch.
Within ten minutes the phone rings and it's Jane. My first thought was the machine will get it and I'll call her later, but in the next breath I got up and answered it. I even almost said hey Jane. LOL
She needed someone to talk to about things that were going on and needed some encouragement from someone. So I figured God told me that so I wouldn't ignore her...because that's what I wanted to do being tired and all.

I don't know why that happens sometimes and not all the time, especially when I really want it too in different areas. It's weird.

I don't know Rachel. We need to closely examine scripture. I believe God uses us in different ways. What you said doesn't seem unscriptural. Right off hand I can't think of anything.
There some things that right away we can know it isn't scriptural, and should be measured against scripture, and scripture having the authority.

    Donna,

Everything must be checked against Scripture. But what if the experience doesn't affect "doctrine."

I believe that some experiences are too personal that you cannot test it against scripture. For example, what about if I say, "God moved me to pray for my pastor last night."

A crackpot response would be, "Where does it say in the bible that God moved you to pray for your pastor last night?"

Not all experiences can be tested against scripture--mostly only those affecting doctrine and theology, and the character of God can.

    Yes Robert they can.
Is it scriptural to pray for people?
    Yes
Scripture has to be our authority for our chrisitan/spiritual lives.
I did not say all expereinces, I said spiritual experiences.
    Two different things.

    Donna,

But we must remember that there are genuine spiritual experiences and the counterfeit ones too.

    I thought of these verses

2 thess 2:9 that is the one coming is in accord with with the activity of Satan with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish

1john 4:1 Beloved do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the spirit of God.

When we test the spirtis how do we know what is true and false?
God already told us, in scripture.
