I'm trying to resolve an issue.

Might I ask where the verses are for qualifications of a pastor. Most importantly where it protains to money, and if or if not he should be the treasure of the church. I am wondering if the pastor is supposed to know who tithes and who doesn't.

I would appriciate scripture to back it up please.

Just out of curiousity, why do you ask? Seems like a situation has occured which prompts this question.

Yes it does. The situation is which is Biblical

    Pastor being a treasure
    Pastor not being a treasure

And to be honest my Biblical knowledge isn't that great so I figured I would ask

Well, I don't think there's anything in the Bible about whether or not the pastor should be a treasurer.

Is it smart? Not really. Should the pastor be involved in leading the church relative to financial matters? Yes. But do so as to be above reproach using a great deal of caution, wisdom and shared accountability. I'd be happy to elaborate if you'd share more detail.

Lea---1 & 2 Timothy give us a wealth of information pertaining to qualifications of Pastor---as well as the book of Titus.

As far as Pastor being Treasurer---nowhere in there that points left or right.

As far as knowing who does or doesn't tithe---it doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to figure who does and doesn't even if he isn't the Treasurer. Non-tithers generally have a way of "tellin'" on themselves!

The preacher isn't any better off or worse off knowing or not knowing who tithes and who doesn't!

He's way better off NOT being the Treasurer! It would be a great relief to the non-tithers if he isn't the Treasurer!

I Tim 3, Titus 1 give lists of qualifications, Lea. Being a "treasurer" of the congregation is NOT on the list.

Doesn't this belong in the "Control Freak Pastor" ? :)

I've seen this to be growing in Indep. Baptist groups, so they can "spiritually nurture" those that don't give what they should.

As has been covered, it really isn't a good idea at all, the "appearance of evil" thing you know :)

The only "elder" who was ever the "treasurer" was a guy named Judas Iscariot...not a good precedent.

I was the treasurer for the first year out of necessity (Church only had 17 people including my family). As soon as I was able to train someone who was trustworthy, I turned it over to him. I did not want to have that responsibility and it was a great relief to turn it over to someone else.

I think no pastor should serve as treasurer. I say this for HIS protection. It is just too tempting to accuse the preacher of dipping his hands wrongly into Church funds. And usually people do not ask for proof before they jump ship or help split the Church or even run off the pastor, they simply fuel off of accumilated gossip

Pastor, church treasurer, bad idea. Let the board of trustees or deacons appoint a treasurer and make the treasurer accountable to them and the pastor. It will go better for everybody that way.1st&2nd Timothy and Titus tell us about the qualifications of a pastor and his duties. The pastor is not to be a lover of money.

In order to keep from having the appearance of evil a pastor should not be treasurer. Also, my humble opinion is that the pastor should be concerned about caring for the flock the LORD has entrusted him with. With the exception of small congregations where he has no choice I believe the pastors should have next to nothing to do with the finances.

I spend the money, but don't count, record or know who gives what concerning money. There are too many possible conflict of interest situations out there to be the pastor and treasure, IMO. It could be debated if a pastor should know what someone give considering it is a matter of spiritual maturity and not how much, but I have chosen to encourage everyone to give assuming we could all use reminding. I must say I am fortunate to serve in a very generous church that understands effective ministry often times requires financial backing.

I want to add that I think it is a bad idea that deacons become treasurers also! Nearly everytime that I have witnessed this I have seen the deacon have too much control. The treasurer should be a standalone job or the job of a secretary or such!

I'll tell you this little church needs plenty of prayer. It's a very bad situation and it's only getting worse. I stopped going to this church once before for certian problems. But, I returned because I felt I could help. It's 100 times worse this time. I'm really at a loss on what to do or say. I have no direction nor any idea what i'm supposed to do. I'll be honest with you all, I've NEVER been in a situation Like this in my life. I've never seen this kind of behavior. I don't understand it and i'm frustrated beyond all belief.

then leave. You should learn that where God is not worshipped in truth and spirit, God is not there! Leave and find a Church that centers of worship.

A wise preacher once told me that you should never stay at a Church because of a name on a pew or a grave yard! He meant that trivial things should never tie you to a place that is not serious in worship!
