I have read many different job desrciptions for pastors that have been offered by Churches. I am curious, however, if anyone here has ever done a Biblical study of what a pastor's duties are to be. What does the Bible say a pastor should do and how much does that line up with what most churches today expect or get from their pastors?

Bump. Doesn't anyone have any ideas or scripture to share about this?

    Thanks,

Joseph, Look at John 10. I know that talks about Crist, but there is an implication of the responsibilities of the Pastor also.

How many times is the word "pastor" found in the New Testament? How many church letters are addressed to the "pastor"? Are there any instances of the apostles calling for THE pastor of a church?

Very few churches understand that a leader has people following him. For someone to be a leader he must be actively discipling others. How can anyone demonstrate discipleship to a congrehation according to Mt. 4:19 and 28:19,20 if he is not doing it now? If he is not leading others then he is not a leader. If someone cannot lead one person then how will he lead the church?

In the qualification in Timothy and Titus is implied that the man is a leader. If a man has not proven himself in discipling others then he will not lead in doing it with a congregation.

Two excellent sermons on leadership are at http://66.218.71.225/search/cache?p=Born+to+Reproduce&sub=Search&url=csV8EdPVFzIJ:www.bibleteacher.org/Dm118_8.htm

Each of the "titles" that are synonyms for a pastor will give insight into the job description.

POIMEN (Ephesians 4:11; I Peter 5:12) "Shepherd of the Flock"

PRESBUTEROS (I Peter 5:1; Hebrews 14:23) "President of the Assembly"

EPISCOPOS (Philippians 1:1; I Peter 5:12) "Superintendent of a Work Force"

DIDASKOLOS (Romans 2:20; I Corinthians 12:28) "Teacher of the School"

KERUX (I Timothy 2:7; II Timothy 1:11; II Peter 2:5) "Preacher of the Congregation"
