    Pelvic Thrust Dancing = Worship???

"This is a video of a Saddleback Worship Concert.

There are teenage girls doing dance moves that include Pelvic Thrusts.

Is this really worship to the one true God of the Bible or is this worship to one of those pagan sex gods? You be the judge?

UPDATE: Apparently Saddleback is now embarassed by their 'hoochy-dancing' and has pulled the original video. However, someone was able to get a hold of a copy of this video and re-post it. You can still view it or download it by..."

Gee...this video reminds me of the same whorish trash that my high school dance team used to perform at pep rallies. This does not belong in church!!!

:BangHead: Ahh... the newest chapter in that best-selling book, Bashing the Purpose-Driven Church/Life/Rick Warren/Saddleback Church by members of the BaptistBoard. What is this, chapter 458?

[sigh] comment removed, because, what's the point? [sigh]

Consider that the bashing might stop if this church would get their mugs out of the news. I ignored it from two sources that I typically read and by the third, I thought it might be relevant to share.

Beyond this, it is not really a bash. The question presented by the author was "Is the pelvic-thrust a form of worship to the true God or to a pagan sex god? Does your church do the pelvic-thrust? If no, why not? If yes, who are you worshipping?

All I saw was a picture, not a video. And it looked like a couple of girls, not the whole church, which is what this discussion leads one to believe. Truth si we don't know what happened there, we weren't there, or what happened after, supose somoene spoke up and this won't be done again in church. Again, we don't know.

If one is attending church for its entertainment value, I don't think you can get better than this. If this were to suddenly appear in our church, we'd need EMT's to tend to our older folk.

    Saddleback continues to disappoint me.

I am confident that given the video of ANY church, I can release some kind of shocking "news" report about it. Don't think so...just send me your tape and we'll give it a try.

Since I haven't heard from anyone that was there, nor do I really know anything other than what someone has decided to show me, it seems to be a non-issue to me.

I am concerned about the person that sought to freeze the frame at the right "pelvic" moment.

OK, I watched the video, not really my style, but what i saw looked like a 21st century youth choir presentation of a modern christian song in a concert type situation. Would have no problems with my kids being involved.

My main objection to the dancing? .. my body is too old and unfit to match it.

    Regards
    Bob

I watched the video twice. It's definately not something I would do, but then again, I've always danced like a 225 pound white country boy. It's obviously not a church service, it's a youth event. I saw absolutely nothing in the dancing that was sexual. If you do, maybe the problem is with your eyes, not the dance.

Okay, so witnesses of the video have testified that pelvic thrusts are indeed in the dancing. Lagardo and Donna's concerns that these might have been still pics wrenched from their contexts have now been laid to rest.

    Moving on.

Who here thinks this is what Paul would call decent and in order?

    SBC, you go first.

Having no real knowledge of the event, I don't think one could say...plus, it would be hard to know what Paul might say..especially in the sense that he now resides in heaven, where faith has passed into knowlege. I don't think I could possibly come close to what he might say.

Just out of curiosity...where was the "testimony" of the "pelvic thrusts?"

Being someone who comes out "swinging" when I see even a glimpse of exploitation of women, I viewed this video with interest.

Also, being someone who believes that worship is a God-centered experience, I viewed this video with trepidation.

Here are my thoughts and opinions, if anyone cares:

    • There was nothing sexual about the content is this video. I tried really hard to make it be so, as I am a crusader against exploitation of women, and I would have loved to have jumped on this like a banshee.
    • It isn't something I am accustomed to seeing and I probably won't see it in my church, but I was not offended by it.
    • There were boys hopping and jumping around with the girls and who were just as animated as the girls. Why did the original poster focus on only the motions of the girls? Therein lies a whole sermon.....
If I found objection at all, it was the focusing on the young people dancing and not focusing on the singers or the song, hence, in my tradition-minded view, the dancing was distracting.

Not because of anything sexual, because there wasn't anything sexual, but because I was not accustomed to dancers in a worship setting.

Now, to be fair, if we are going to pass a negative judgement on these young people for focusing the attention on themselves, then we are going to have to pass judgement on those occassional soloists in our churches who have ever sang only for their own glory (there are those that do that, folks, you know it.) And we are going to have to pass judgement on those occassional spruced up Southern Baptist preachers who preen around the pulpit like peacocks, crying out the gospel just to hear themselves squawk (and there are those who do that, too, folks, you know it)

So, yes, I thought it was a little too focused on the dancers and not on the message of the song, but, sorry Aaron, I found nothing indecent nor disorderly about it.

This is a thoughtful observation...thank you.

I have been involved in churches at both ends of the traditional/contemprary spectrum, and I have found the focus on self problem to be a universal issue. Ironically, I think I've seen more immodest dress and behavior in the traditional churches.

If I may add...There was nothing "whorish" about it, as some have declared. I'm sorry but that crossed the line, IMO. It certainly was not a Christian thing to say.

People, get over it. What was the point of this thread? Other than the obvious, "let's bash Saddleback", for the hundreth time, I see no point. If you do not attend Saddleback you have no business prying into THEIR church affairs. This may be surprising, but there are people who disagree with you on what is appropriate for a worship service, especially a youth service.

Dancing is not my cuppa wherever it is done, but that was so where I grew up in Baptist Churches.

Having said that, the name Saddleback for a church was enough to turn me off. I just don't pay any mind to it at all. There are far too many faithful churches still around no matter how far off base these offshoots want to go.

    Cheers,

    Ambivolent Jim

FWIW.. The church is in Sabbleback Valley... So that might have something to do with it's name. :)

I also viewed the video, and I wish our church was at lively when the kids were in the service. I saw nothing wrong with the video, and I am sorry to say, but I think even if they have come out and sang a nice hymal, then someone would find SOMETHING BAD to say, just because it came from this church.
