That was a common complaint in the early church. In Acts 6, Peter and the others gave a solution ... deacons ... </font>[/QUOTE]The deacons in our church only nod their head when the Pastor gestures. He has lectured us so many times about the role of the Pastor - it is similar to a dictator in my opinion.

    Do I dare say that?

I'm really curious to hear how this is going?

If you have made any headway on getting what you would like to do ?

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing. Nothing. The chuch secretary is improperly applying scripture where it is not intended to be implied.

Some churches actually have paid staff who are paid to teach students music. What a ministry in a day when it is getting harder and harder to get music teachers. Just remember the average family pays more for entertainment than they do for the education of their children. Isn't it any wonder why we have so many lazy parents who complain when their son or daughter has to work hard in school. Even some of the textbooks have been dumbed down to accomodate this.

If it was okay with the pastor then tell the secretary needs to stick her nose somewhere else. It is none of her business.

Ask that church secretary if she would be willing to let you be put on the church payroll and teach for free. It would probably be better that way.

Inform that secretary that money changes hands when she works and it also does when the pastor works. So what is the difference when you perform a service?

I am going to talk to the Pastor tomorrow morning. And the 2 girls are having their first lessons tomorrow afternoon, whether they are at the church or in the park. The ministry is something that has weighed heavy on my heart, and I must do this.

Ok, Pastor says I must be on payroll and the money must be collected through the church funds. He says that so many churches are jeopardizing their tax exempt status by allowing profit individuals and groups use their facilities, and he won't allow that to happen to us. He also says that the IRS is watching churches very closely these days, trying to find reasons to revoke the tax exempt status, since the ACLU and other far left groups are pressuring them so much.

Sad state of affairs in this world, don't you think? Anyway, he is going to present the idea to the deacons, and we will go from there.

DC, perhaps you could rent the facilities from the church on a per-student basis, and continue your lessons. This is allowable by IRS standards (so long as property rental does not make up the bulk of the church's income).

Most churches already do this in one form or another. For example, many churches charge a rental fee to non-member couples for weddings, or charge a rental fee for use of the fellowship hall, etc.

Debbie, please do not be discouraged! Sometimes, people misconstrue truly charitable ideas or deeds as for personal gain.

You have made the suggestion to your pastor. Perhaps he will think about it and see that it is a good thing for his church.

Pray about this. I am always amazed at how our Lord God works in His time to accomplish His Plan and He puts us in the appropriate place at the appropriate time.

Your pastor did say that he would present it to the Deacons. Continue to pray that if God will open the door for you to give these precious children music lessons.

My first teacher taught private lessons at the public school. We could take piano lessons during our recess or quiet time. This was before there were the rules that we face today.

Tatertot, how wonderful of you to teach music to regenerate the musicians of the church in addition to all your other ministries.

Anytime, someone joins our church, I ask them if they play the piano or the organ. No one has said yes. The pianist and I need backup. We do have some youth who play the piano, but they still lack the confidence to play for services.

I am praying hard for this...and one of the deacon's kids is one of the students, so I am praying that his influence will help the other deacons decide.

We had a first lesson last Thursday - both girls at the same time with note paper, learning the grand staff and the names of the notes. No charge for this - they will get credit at school.

When I split them into private lessons, I hope this issue is resolved. Pray for us. I will take on as many students as God allows.
