I saw a really good point made by Smoke Eater on another thread & thought I would ask what people thought. If it has already been discussed, I apologize.

I don't like the pictures of Jesus that I see. The long hair bothers me. The apostle Paul, in 1Cor 11:14 seems to say long hair on a man is a shame.
Ezekiel 44:20 says the Jewish priests were to keep their hair short. & Jesus was a Jewish priest. The Jewish Talmud instructs priests to have their hair cut every 30 days. All the coins & busts of that time portray the men with short hair.
The Nazarites were commanded to not cut their hair ( Num 6:5 ), but Jesus was a Nazarene, not a Nazarite. We know sampson was a Nazarite (Ju 13:5),& Samuel ( 1Sa 1:11 ),but I don't see a reference to Jesus being one.
Based on that research, I have come to the conclusion that Jesus didn't have long hair.

    Any thoughts ?

Hair styles of the Romans were short cropped and clean shaven.

Male hair style of Jews was probably longer, but not the effeminate (artist Solomon's head of Christ is well known) long hair or pony tail. They would have allowed long hair from each side of the head (as orthodox Jews do today).

And 99% of the Jews had a beard. Jesus' beard was ripped out during his pre-crudixion torture, so marring his appearance that people who saw Him on the cross wondered if he was really human.

    Now that was love.

I forgot about the beards. Also, I imagine that John the Baptist's hair probably had an unkempt appearance. But I see no reference to it.

Jesus is our high priest, but He was not a Jewish priest, the priests had to come from the tribe of Levi, Jesus was from the tribe of Judah. So that all the rules for hair length for priests does not apply to Jesus.

Correct. Jesus was called rabbi, because he taught, even though he did not attend rabbinical school.

This might be a new topic, but dont you think that pictures of Jesus are a violation of the second commandment in the Decalogue?

Deut 5:8 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."

Oh Thank you Dr. Bob!!! I don't know why, but I really needed the reminder of what Jesus went through for us. Thanks again for the picture of the love of God.

Dfd2 pictures of Jesus would only be a problem if you were to worship them instead of Him.

    Brain,

But the text doesnt say its ok to make an image as long as it isnt worshiped. v.8"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness..."

v.9 "You shall not bow down to them or serve them...."

The commandment clearly states that we are not to make any likeness period.

Thomas Watson in his book Ten Commandments says on pg. 62
    "
Ques. If it be unlawful to make the image of God the Father, yet may we not make an image of Christ, who took upon him the nature of man?

Ans. No! Epiphanius, seeing an image of Christ hanging in a church, broke it in peices. It is Christ's Godhead, united to his manhood, that makes him to be Christ; thererefore to picture his manhood, when we cannot picture his Godhead, is a sin, because we make him to be but half Christ--we seperate what God has joined, we leave out that which is the chief thing which makes him to be Christ."

I would just encourage us to take a look at what the Bible says about making images of God and Christ. To honestly look to see whether or not our tradition of making pictures of Jesus is really Biblical or not or is it in direct violation of God's Word.

I had always assumed that the pictures of Jesus in my KJV Bible I had growing up were accurate, because that was the Bible that Jesus and Paul used.

But don't you think that hanging a picture of someone (like the ones that think it is Jesus) is wrong? How many pictures around the world are the same picture? Life magazine had several pictures that were pictures of Jesus from each country. It was on their front cover. I think that it is wrong because Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever. He never changes but the world has changed Him.

Ok well what do you use for money? Or a drivers license? or words or letters can your kids play with crayons?
    Do you watch television?

Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, ar that is in the waters beneath the earth: (Deut. 5 vs8 notice that it ends with a colon to tell you that what comes next is part of the same subject)
vs. 9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, ( the graven images you aren't to make) , nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

You yourself posted both these verses how can they be so totally lost for you?
Jesus was also all man or His sacrifce would mean nothing if He couldn't have lived the sinless life we can't. We can;t imagine what God looks like but we have a good idea what a first century jew did. I submit once again worshipping anything other than Almighty God in any of His persons is what we are being told here not to do.
A picture of Jesus isn't a problem any more than the picture on your drivers license. If you worship the picture it is sin.

I'm with you, querty. If the Scofield Reference Bible (KJV) (RL??) was good enough for Paul, it should be good enough for me. :D :D :D

That includes the maps and pictures... ;)

    I will never believe that
    1. Jesus had long hair
    2. That Jesus looks like those pix you see EVERYWHERE depicting Him a thin not too strong looking man.

I mean, c'mon, Jesus was a Carpenter and back then they didn't have power saws! LoL

Can't actually confirm this, but something I heard sometime back stated that our present day pictures of Christ are derived from Michaelangelo's painting of the Lord's supper; Mike's time period, the culture he lived in, and his personal beliefs led to him painting Christ the way he wanted to. For whatever reason, no one's ever questioned it.

So it's more likely that Christ looked like a typical Jew, with short hair, beard, and not so effeminate.

There is a confirmation on the early christian catacombs of paintings of Jesus as a muscular young man with short hair with a lamb about his neck. If I find it I will post the web site.
If it is an abomination for a man to have long hair according to the scriptures then Jesus had short hair. It also states he shall shave with a razor that is hired. Well there goes the beard... Brother Glen [IMG]

    Wow...great responses & no nastiness.
We have no pictures of Jesus at our church. My church isn't perfect, but pretty close ;)

Seriously, I see no need to put a picture, or likeness of him anywhere. We have his word, we will see him face to face.

I don't think he had any outstanding features at all, Judas had to kiss him so the Romans would know who to arrest.

Thanx a lot for the responses [IMG] [IMG]
