Pit Stop No. 2

NASCAR is for folks who think it is truly "athletic" to make four left turns. At 180mph it is a MIRACLE, but truly not a sport.

So don't worry. It's a fad and will soon die out. As soon as the beer-drinkin, snuff chewing, pork rind eating fans die out . . which will be quicker than most realize!

I've got about four women in my church--who--just like "clock work" on Saturday nite will park their cars in the church parking lot and motor up together to one of the dirt track races in the area. These women go without their husbands---who roll their eyes  at the thought of such foolishness.

The races are seasonal---Fall and Spring!

The women are who I would describe as "Bubba-etts!"

Way back in the 1970's we had that Arab "Oil Embargo"---Nixon said to turn thermostats down to 68 degrees for winter and 78 degrees for summer. The "Eternal Flame" was capped over JFK's tomb! Speed limits were reduced to 55mph!!

Yet, the Unser's still had their NASCAR---wastin' precious Petrol!! You'd watch um---go round and round and round that track--engines sounding like a bunch of angry Hornets!!! They'd go in for a pitstop and that Gasoline would slosh all over the place----and we had to sit in long lines on "Even/Odd" days to get our gas!!!

I didn't feel better---when sittin' in line for 2 hours on an "Even" day only to forget that your license tag ended with an "Odd" number!!!! And the Gas Station man wouldn't "Cut you any slack!!" Not even a much younger Blackbird and Blackbird's daddy or momma or sister!!! Now, thats bad!!!!!

Your beloved buddy,
Blackbird

What car have you ever personally (or jointly with the banker) owned that was REALLY BAD - lots of fixing up, etc etc

Had a '63 rambler straight 6 with overdrive. With a PLASTIC timing gear. Worked with a man in my church to put a new one in, reset everything, regrind heads. Learned a lot.

Then after 4k more, it BLEW AGAIN. Cracked the block, bent the rods, sheared the valves. 120k on the engine for naught.

Learned a lot more.

Don't buy a Rambler.

1983 Ford F150 Stepside. Slung a rod, blew the engine. Had a friend of a friend that said he and his daddy could fix it for about a thousand less that anyone else.

He said it would only take him 10-12 days to fix it. Verbal agreement and a handshake was all there was. Some 3 months  later I got my truck back. Brand new motor. Ran like a charm until somebody shot a hole in my radiator.

I feel your pain. Florida? I walked across FSU campus one day to do a seminar there.

Talk about feeling like a minority! I was genuinely fearful in that warm fall evening . . and I am 6'6" and 280!!

Probably a bunch of students saw ME coming and felt fearful as well!

Thar's more good ole bubba's in Florida than in Georgia. They'll run you off the road, just for looking at them.

Man, I've driven in Florida and seldom even SEE the driver.

Often just the purple/gray hair shows above the steering wheel.
