    Today in history;

On June 14th, 1954 president Eisenhower signed a law changing the pledge of allegiance from "one nation" to "one nation under God".

Many now seem to believe the words "under God" was always in the pledge. It was seen by others as a political move to say that America as being god fearing and the Soviet Union as godless.

It is also interesting that pledge originally did not even have 'the United States of America' in it.

Yes, that is interesting. Thanks for pointing it out. The original pledge reads:

I wonder how many would be willing to return to the original version?

Considering the current President is trying to take us out of trusting God to trusting Government possibly everyone who voted for him.

If has been a long long time since America really trusted God if it ever did. Those who truly trust God won't be swayed by a president.

That is true but not many trust in God very much anymore as proven by our elections. They trust the candidtate to keep giving them handouts until there can no longer be hanouts. Those who trust God won't be swayed to turn from Trusting in God. Then we have to decide which ofthe candiates is the lesser of two evils, at least with GWB we had a president who prayed every morning for guidence from God, not sure he always followed it but he did seek it.

Why does even a discussion about the pledge in the History forum need to become an anti-Obama thread?

Even more interesting is that the pledge was written by a Baptist minister who was a 'Christian Socialist.' His brother wrote a utopian socialist novel titled 'Looking Backward.'

Where was anything said about being anti-Obama, just stated where the nation is headed under him and the ones who voted for him. I pray for his safety every day that God keeps him under his hedge of safety.
BTW wasn't it at the same time when the "Under God" was added to the Pledge it was added to out money also?

'In God we trust' appeared sporadically starting right after the Civil War. I think it was almost universal by the timd of Teddy Roosevelt.

I know that Ike had something to do with the entire motto, maybe he made it the official national motto.

    from wiki:

"On July 11, 1954, just one year after the phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance, the U.S. Congress enacted Public Law 84-140, which required the motto on all coins and currency. The law was approved by President Eisenhower on July 30, 1956, and the motto was progressively added to paper money over a period from 1957 to 1966"

Not to long ago we had some coins printed without the motto, does that make them invalid coinage by this Law?

I guess I was thinking of coinage. I think those recent coins had 'under God' on the edge, did the not?

I am not real big on a secular government 'Under God' policy to start with. I think it is a little hypocritical for a state that claims to be under God to permit the slaughter of 50 million babies.

50 million babies times $10,00/year welfare payments times 18 years. How many of you would vote for THAT tax increase if the babies lived?

Frances Bellamy entered the Rochester Theological Seminary in the fall of 1876. After graduation in 1880, he began his ministry at the Baptist Church of Little Falls, New York. http://www.oldtimeislands.org/pledge/pdgech4.htm

From December 1,1879 to February 1, 1885, the Rev. Francis Bellamy pastored the First Baptist Church of Little Falls. http://www.firstbaptistlittlefalls.org/church_history.html

He is buried in Rome NY where his father David pastored the First Baptist Church. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=4557

I live about 15 minutes from Little Falls. My first pastorate was in Rome where I lived next door to the then current pastor of 1st Baptist. On Tuesdays the two of us would visit Mrs. Green at the local golf course. We never kept a score card and enjoy each other's friendship to this day.
