I must confess: I am considering purchasing my first "premium " Bible.

I have never owned a premium Bible, and this is the very first time I've thought to do so.

I also must say I know absolutely nothing about what's out there, which companies publish them, etc.

Therefore, in an effort to save myself a lot of time (and possible grief and/or regret), I thought I might as well ask for your feedback and/or advice here on the message board.

I'm assuming many of you have a great deal of knowledge, and firsthand experience pertaining to this matter.

Thank you in advance for your much needed (and greatly appreciated) assistance!

P.S. In the event that it makes any difference, I'm seeking a premium Bible in either the NIV or NLT translation. Thank you again.

I love premium Bibles. I have quite a few in various translations and styles.

    A few questions:

What format do you want (single column, double column, references, no references, study notes, no study notes).

How big do you want it to be?

Do you know anything about the different types of leather? (Genuine, Calf-Skin, Goat-Skin, etc).

Single column, no references, no study notes, not big. Don't know about the different types of leather. (Thought I'd get right to the point!) :)

Ok, the CLOSEST thing that matches your requirements is Cambridge NIV Clarion Reference Bible, Black Edge-lined Goatskin Leather - evangelicalbible.com

I will say the two translations you selected actually limit your options in the premium Bible category. There are more to choose from in the ESV, NAS, and KJV categories.

Sorry, I forgot the NASB market is a little lean right now due to the 2020 update.

Well, doggone, I'm not an easy one to shop for, am I? You think maybe I should hold off until the 2020 update is released?

That depends if you like the 2020 update. The problem is not so much that there aren't Bible's in your translations, you are just VERY specific on what you want.

It can be achieved with other translations. For example the ESV has EXACTLY your specifications Crossway ESV Heirloom Legacy Bible (Goatskin, Black) - evangelicalbible.com lol

Okay, I see. I'd really prefer the NASB. However, if it helps, a premium NASB with references would be fine, also.

    Ok, here are your options:

Cambridge NASB Clarion Reference Bible, Black Goatskin - evangelicalbible.com
Cambridge NASB Clarion Reference Bible, Brown Calfskin - evangelicalbible.com
Cambridge NASB Clarion Reference Bible, Black Calf Split - evangelicalbible.com
Lockman NASB Side-Column Wide Margin Reference Bible, Black Calfskin - evangelicalbible.com (This one is a BRICK)

Personally, I have the Clarion in ESV and love it. It is a nice personal size and the references aren't very distracting.

I recommend the New King James Version (NKJV). There are two main issues. Though there are more. The two issues are: the underling text being chosen, and how a text is chosen to be translated.

    John 6:47.

KJV, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."

NKJV, '“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me* has everlasting life.'
    *footnote: NU-Text omits in Me.

NASB, '“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.'

NIV, "Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life."

NLT, '¶“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life.'

There are other verses to compare. I suggest the online blueletterbible.org.

I don't think he was asking opinions on translation, but rather cover and layouts...

Even at that, I am of the strong opinion that chosen text and translation are very impotant. Personally I use the common KJV. I have the others, and more, and use them as needed.

Nelson Premier collection does not exactly meet your criteria but they have some that are very close.

I agree, but your argument about the manuscripts underlying the KJV/NKJV are a bit overplayed. But that is for another time and another thread.

No. The KJV is not the be all end all text. The issue is the actual word of God being corrupted. For every KJV error the modern translations actully correct, there are like 10 other errors introduced. That issue is a war. The KJV only junk is the attack on the correct word of God also, Both ends against the truth.

Thanks again. I will. And I'll consider the ESV, as well. ;)

Crossway's top of the line ESV:

    ESV Reader's Bible, $499.99

Full description from Crossway when they debuted it, of its opulence:
