Shirley Donnelly was a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond,, Va., and was president of the West Virginia Baptist Historical Society.

Donnelly pastored the Baptist church where Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) taught Sunday School, and helped convince him to end his association with the Ku Klux Klan.
