Years ago I preached at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, VA, which has one of those elevated pulpits -- but, in contrast to the ones pictured, it was quite narrow, just a little box. On the one hand, you feel like pontificating because you are lifted up so high above the listeners; but on the other hand, you cannot preach in the "Baptist animated" style, walking around and gesticulating broadly, because the box is so confining.

I also preached once at a Methodist church nearby, which had a very narrow pulpit box, though not elevated. I finally "had" to get out and walk the nave floor in order to be my energetic self!
