CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A crowd cheered Saturday as workers in Charlottesville removed a Confederate statue near the site of a violent white nationalist rally three years ago.

The removal of a bronze figure of a Confederate soldier known as “At Ready” is seen in Charlottesville as a milestone in eliminating divisive symbols of the Civil War.

The Washington Post reports that the process of removing the statue began Saturday morning as workers affixed straps to the 900-pound statute to prepare to remove it from its base.

(CNN)The statue of a Confederate soldier, flanked by a cannon and ammunition, has stood at the county courthouse in Charlottesville, Virginia, since 1909, more than 40 years after the Civil War.

It was christened "At Ready," and the statue's installation during Jim Crow sent a signal to many that resounded for decades -- in a city that renewed its association with deadly racial violence in 2017.

Saturday, the statue is coming down.
The Albemarle County Commission is live streaming the removal on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Charlottesville City Council Member Kristin Szakos said the statue is a symbol of injustice, affiliate WVIR reported last month when the county commission made its decision.

"Clear to every Black defendant who must pass them on the way into court: this space is reserved for the Confederate cause," she said. "You will find no justice here."

Three years ago in the idyllic University of Virginia hometown, a "Unite the Right" rally sparked violence that killed one woman, Heather Heyer, injured dozens of other people and helped to highlight reemerging white supremacy.

It prompted President Donald Trump to say there were "fine people" on both sides of the conflict, which began with a rally by white nationalists and other right-wing groups.

The city and others began grappling with monuments to racism and slavery. A Virginia judge ruled last year that the statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in Charlottesville are war monuments that the city cannot remove without permission from the state.

Across the country, though, some statues were brought down, and some buildings renamed.

There is a statue of a slave here in the Salt City.
So if that offends a group of people - should that be removed?

Monuments go up and they come down. Because blacks are trying to force their culture upon America, they go after the Southern monuments as they can do that without conflict from the Federal govt. The Fed. govt. supports the NAACP and the SPLC who in turn support all these black movements. Thus the removal of Southern monuments and the replacing them with black monuments.

Blacks live under this false sense of safety that they can do this now as though it will always be this way. It won't. Just because you remove our statues, doesn't remove our beliefs. And when you remove our statues and flags you only harden our resistance toward you. You can tie a persons hands, but you can't tie their mind or spirit.

Things among nations can change overnight with but one incident. The U.S. is a powder keg ready to blow. As I have said, there is no compromise, no bridging the divide between the opposing parties. And when it blows, with the Federal govt. losing its hold and control, and the police force being diminished, thanks to the blacks, then all will revert back to State and local rule, and vigilante rule. Much like what you see today in some places.

Why doesn't the NAACP and SPLC and BLM, and the NFL go after the Lincoln memorial? He was a white racist. Why isn't it torn down? Because they are in bed with the Fed. govt. and the Fed. govt. would never allow it. So vent your hatred against whites by going after Southern monuments. But leave the Lincoln Memorial alone.

So what, the city wanted to remove this statue, it's not like your buddies tore this one down when they were peacefully protesting.

It prompted President Donald Trump to say there were "fine people" on both sides of the conflict, which began with a rally by white nationalists and other right-wing groups.

Trump DID say there were people who wanted to keep the statues and people who didn't, and some of them were fine people but I've got a hunch that's not what the writers want you to think he said here.

Back to the statues directly, removing this one ought to make a yuge difference in racial relations. But I still have the old philosophical question: If a racist dagon falls in a forest but no racist hears its sound, did the racist dagon make a noise?

The definition of black is someone with a certain amount of melanin who votes for Biden. One has to vote for Biden if he has the melanin. Actions speak louder than genetics.
