The english language is a constantly changing language. You don't even have to go back to the 1600s. How about some word usages in the 50s that are no longer common.

    Horn - Telephone
    Lighter - A crew cut
    Radioactive - Very popular
    Sides - Vinyl records

Yes, to let something is to prevent something else from preventing it. To allow something is to prevent something else from preventing it. That doesn't mean prevent and allow are the same thing, as the verbs are acting on different objects.

This is a graphically bloody little icon. I think it should be rated 'R'.

    Yours, Bluefalcon

What else did you expect? For some one that is nearing bloodlessness to "LET" anything other?

Natters, you're wrong in your assumption, to let means prevention of that which would otherwise prevent that which should take place, nothing more or less. Allow does not carry the same conotation, it means one in the authoritve positiion "lets" the action by preventing hinderences from otherwise preventing the said action.

In the use of "let" for "hinder" in the KJV, we see the "lett-er" (preventer or hinderer) is the Holy Spirit. I believe He has all power and authority to allow or prevent as necessary.
