A worker was killed in the crush Friday after a throng of shoppers eager for post-Thanksgiving bargains burst through the doors at a suburban Wal-Mart, authorities said.

I heard about this on the news. This is so terribly sad. We've become such a nation of "thing" mongers. I'm wondering how those people who burst through those doors this morning are feeling tonight about their bargains.

Not a clear sign of a hurting economy

If only those few represented everyone you'd be right.

For starters they were trampled at a Walmart. People trying to get in on sales for cheap merchandise at a Walmart.

We served dinner at a mission yesterday and saw probably 4 or 5 times the people we served last year. We heard some very sad testimonies also.

One lady had 5 kids and said her husband was recently killed in Afghanistan. The military gave her 4 days to move off post and his SGLI (Life Insurance) hasn't been paid because there is a problem with the beneficiary form. She is coming by next week and we'll see about helping her find a job.

Another man said he left his family and moved out on to the streets so they would qualify for welfare. I wonder what takes a man to this rational and level of desperation. How low must one be when they feel this is the best solution.

Material things are really the god of most Americans ... including those who call themselves Christian.

Sad that others selfish greed and desire to be first cost a young man his life.
Wonder if any in that crowd will remember him and his family come Christmas time?

Materialism rules in a world filled with pagans: And, unfortunately, I'm not that certain that paganized celebrations have really benefited the preaching of the gospel.

(Sorry about a similar post..... I should've read through these before posting.)

It is offensive to be called godless and worshipping a false god, that I am pagan, because I left the house on Friday November 28 and went into a store. I do not care who buys Christmas gifts and who doesn't, it does not give you the right to bash those of us who do, especially since my mother asked me to buy a few things for her to give as gifts.

In a crowd of 1000 people how can you know who or what any one person is laughing at? You simply can not.

This whole topic of calling people names is godless! So you who bash are participating in ungodly activity. I hope it makes you feel good.

LeB, are you saying these lives that marred forever are less-meaningful because they are at WalMart, a place you loathe, or are you just typically on message regarding your distaste for WalMart and those who believe they get good priced quality merchandise there? I know you do the latter, but I pray you are not doing the former.

I know it kills you that people shop at WalMart and that WM sells stuff cheaper than other folks, but let's not degrade what happened.

And Crabtownboy is right (for once ). If anyone would like to argue that America is not materialistic, they can go right ahead and waste their breath. We spend more on gold bathroom fixtures than we do on missions in this country. This year, I heard people who do not give a dime to missions to spread the name of Christ give money to spread the name of a political candidate. The avg. Christian gives right at 2% of their annual income to their churches. Churches are increasingly doing less benevolence and mission activities. All the while, driving Lexuses from their spacious homes to their costly and plush churches - while the Persecuted Church suffers daily.

I'm not against people having Lexuses or churches being plush or homes being comfy. I'm not against people having WiiS sitting next to their PS3 under their 57"" HDTV. I am against these things taking money that God can use to further His Kingdom.

Typically the figures that measure what people give to churches spread the total given among everyone. This type of stat is misleading and incomplete. The truth is many give 10% or more and many more give nothing.

This thread is not about materialism of individuals. Start another thread is you want to rant on that. It is about the hyped up financial crisis compared to the obvious spending that continues.

Didn't mean to offend, Rev.... I just didn't see anything in your link regarding the recession and very little in your comment. So, for the record, here's the topic:
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a "tragic situation" and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. The man's name was not released and the cause of death was not immediately known.

A police statement said shortly after the store's 5 a.m. opening time, shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking (the worker) to the ground."

Nope ..... doesn't sound like recession to me.

(I reported my own OP.... so it should be closing soon, if not already.)

You guys know what really sad, after trampling this person to death I read this article...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/feedarticle/8099110

Shoppers interviewed on Saturday said they were disappointed by the deals this weekend and bet stores would offer even steeper discounts in the weeks to come -- a worrisome sign for retailers struggling with weak profits.

So they rush in killing their fellowman to learn that the sale is not all that big of a sale. Perhaps they would have felt more rewarded if they'd of reached out a hand to the fallen man???

But they were so eager to spend in spite of the perceived financial crisis that they were willing to trample a man as they do every year even in good financial circumstances. Must not be feeling to much of a pinch.

I'll give you a hint, I just got home from spending $76 at Walmart. I have a famous saying, when God wants me to have it He'll put it on the shelf at one of the marts (Walmart, KMart). :godisgood:

However, the truth is the merchandise there is cheap for a reason. You do get what you pay for. My comment was clearly about someone having total disregard for their fellowman while trying to find a "deal" on the quality of merchandise Walmart sells.

If my comments offends you then I apologize but I shop at Walmart knowing full well I am not getting top of the line merchandise. I prefer affordable over quality. If you believed otherwise then I'm sorry...

One could also say times are so bad that one feels the need to trample their fellowman trying to get a deal because they can't afford to buy otherwise...

I don't call this story an economic indicator of any type. However, if you read the link I posted the articles title is, "U.S. holiday sales get off to slow start".

Why are ant they off to a dead start if it is as bad as is presented.

Perhaps it is a reflection of a bad economy ...... when people are willing to kill or trample another human being to death for the sake of a bargain here or there.

(I doubt seriously that many of those shoppers were driven by the necessities of food, clothing, or shelter, in the stampede for those sales.)
