    I agree with you, but taxes are already used to influence behaviour.

    I give you the so called "sin" tax with the outrageous tax on cigarettes designed to influence behavior as well as raise money. Why?

    The reasoning is that cigarettes are bad for ones health with the result of increasing medical expenses and an increased burden on society.

    There is no doubt at all that the same can be said for alcohol, but worse.
    Alcohol destroy our young people and kills many of the innocent that don't drink at all.

    It's all just wishful thinking. There are far too many alcoholic legislators to ever get this one done.

    Or we could stop picking up the tab for people who make poor decisions by subsidizing public health care. That would likely be more influential than a nanny state. And more respectable.

    We aren't going to be able to afford the nanny state we've got now for much longer, which brings us to the surveillance state. Wouldn't it be best if we just watched eveyone all the time and "prevented" them from causing soceity problems "before" they could do it? Even if it violated everyone's so called rights and privacy wouldn't it be worth it...to be safe and to have an orderly soceity?
