It will prove to be unconstitutional, as it would infringe a person's Amendment I freedom of speech rights.

That's one vote out of 25, as of now, so disregard it. If you make a poll you have to expect a few answers just for annoyance, and one of out 25 beats the average. Even if that person was being truthful, it's still just a single vote by someone who is on a site because he's antogonistic; so, big deal.

Sure it is. If a person is free to burn, say, a dutch flag, german flag, or nazi flag as a matter of free speech, then they are free to burn an american flag as a matter of free speech in the same manner. The Superme Court cases United States vs Eichman and Texas vs Johnson have already decided that fact.

As for you praying on the issue. I fail to see why. This is not a spiritual issue.

Unlike you JohnV there are American who care about protecting our Flag from desecration. Demonstrated by the House last year. It’s not over and will continue to be debated. Desecrating our flag is not speech. In fact burning a flag is a fire hazard that could harm someone. I would call it an aggressive crime with intent to harm and destroy personal property and endanger those around.

How unfortunate that you are lacking in this area. Perhaps it’s because you worship the same god as Islam, unlike myself. ;)

I have a hard time beleiving that anyone would question one's spirituality because of their interpretation of "freedom of speech."

Johnv is correct here. I would give that person the right to express their distaste by burning a flag. It would sadden me, but I would not support their arrest.

Would those who want the flag protected by law have supported Nazi laws forbidding the burning of its flag in 1939?

Oh my how offensive......wait I aint a yank.....

But the flag of any country is a symbol of the pride and honour of the nation. Men die for their flag.

Only a wicked scoundrel would do such a thing...a free ticket on a leaky boat sounds right to me...it is treason in my book.

I agree that only a wicked scoundrel would do such a thing. You are correct, but they do have a right to express their views.

I don't think anyone ever died for a flag, they died for their country.

I am as red blooded American as any American here. Part of what has made America so great is that we allow people to express their views freely. That is why I would stand up for their right to do so. I would be deeply hurt and even disgusted by their actions, but it should not be illegal and I cerainly would not want to beat them up.

Isn't our country big enough to survive a few punks expressing their views?

I'd join the flag burners. Need something to light the barbie with ;)

Before I get lynched (bring extra strength rope ;) ) I'ld reach for an Aussie one just as quickly if the snags (sausages) needed cremating...generally a bit of kero on a stick is quicker, easier and cheaper though...

I doubt I'll ever work out the fascination people have with bits of cloth on sticks. Oh well [IMG]

    C4K states:

Of course, the fact that I a short little overweight middle aged bald guy may have something to do with my lack of temptation to beat someone up .

    -----------------------
But then again C4K, there are many of us "short little overweight middle aged bald guys" who go to the YMCA or your local gym to run 2 or 3 miles or bench 300 or 350 in weight training each day, before we put up the ladder to go to work each day. Count us in the first option in the poll.

    That was a "joke." [IMG]

Seriously, would Christ be honoured if His servant beat someone for burning a national symbol?

I care about protecting the flag from desecration. But I care more about protecting a person's right to free speech, which includes burning a flag in righteous protest if they feel so moved. Criminalizing free speech, even if that speech is disrespectful, is incredibly dangerous.

The flag burning amendment has been discussed in the house many, many times, and never made it past that.

Okay, so why single out the American flag? If I wanted to burn the Iranian flag, would you likewise think so? Likely not.
That's an unrighteous insult. If you want to whine like a schoolyard bully, feel free. But don't expect people to take you seriously. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but Amendment I protects me.

This seems to be a new take on an old concept.

"Agree with me or you are a dirty Reb/Yank, Hun, Jap, Nazi, Communist, and now Muslim."

No, not at all. The flag burning thing is silly. I wouldn't like to see anyone do it, and I would have to fight human urges to stop them. But no, it would not be glorifying Christ to give in and start pummelling folks.

Why do you considered it righteous? Very disturbing…
It’ not over. Hope abounds for many Americans, not you of course.

Earth to JohnV, what a ridiculous question…

Are you finished with your tantrum… [IMG]
