Perhaps the SBC should investigate what is really needed, what the local problems are, and what can best be done to help.

About taking the vacation ... as Carlyle Marney told me the last time I saw him, "We pastors are like quail. We will always follow the money corn trail right into the trap." His words, not mine.

Not just the SBC, but all we Americans need to learn that the entire world is not like us, does not want to be like us, and our solutions will not always work in their cultural context.

Johnny Hunt will bring poaitive things to the SBC -- but nothing HE does as President will CAUSE a local church to grow. If the church is not sound, and does not care about souls, it's not going to grow. It doesn't matter who the SBC Prez is.

I was there... so I guess that makes me suspect... But it was no all expense paid vacation. I was at every session, heard every report, voted on almost every thing we voted on.

What many people don't understand is that the SBC exists as an entity for only 2 days in the year, when we meet at the convention. So it is a business meeting. We are told about what has been done. People can question those who stand and give reports. Resolutions can be presented.

And all of it is open to anyone who wants to watch... and then of course, complain about what those present are doing.

For example, the numbers of people who were won to Christ during the Crossover Events. The people in downtown Indianapolis who were witnessed to with tracts and at meals while we were there. The Regenerate Church membership Resolution that was presented in a much watered down form was strengthened by amendments concerning Baptist identity and repentence over our pride for numbers that don't really add up.

In fact, if you went to the Pastor's conference and heard the sermons given throughout you could make the argument that the theme of the convention was "Repentence"

Now, I'm off to plan for next years vacation in Louisville... I wonder where the best hotel is and where the most expensive fine dining restaurant is. :tonofbricks: :BangHead:

Tom, I believe you misunderstood. This was a meeting, not a convention, in Eastern Europe and as pastors are not paid in most of the churches in Central and Eastern Europe they could not begin to afford attending such a meeting without financial aid.

The SBC, coming in with its own agenda, did not seem to understand the problems these pastors face and did not seem interested in hearing from the pastors.

Turns out "Dr." Johnny Hunt has been caught "stretching" the truth just a bit!?! But what does it matter, he gives to the Cooperative Program, signed the 2000 BF&M and is good buddies with Pope Paige, why be concerned about his personal integrity?

Please, this is petty to accuse the man of stretching the truth especially considering that this is a CBF friendly web site. Certainly we can expect no bias toward the SBC from this "ethics" web site. The word ethics is a joke considering that this article is an attack on a good man.

Let the mud start slinging! You know, it's no wonder that people run from Baptists when they try to evangelize in their communities. Is our reputation deserved because of this trash? Let's not talk about the good that this man and his church have accomplished through the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit. Let's ask how many degrees he has, where they're from, and whether or not we think they're good enough.

Is our reputation improved in the community by having an SBC president with a "doctorate" from a degree mill?

But, even then, if he at least listed the degree appropriately, it wouldn't be an ethical problem.

His website mentions nothing about his "doctoral" schools, even though it uses "Dr." four times.

Rev. Hunt has done enough in ministy without having to bolster his reputation with dubious "credentials."

It's sad that we will allow a so call "ethics" site like the one used in the post to judge the credentials of a man duly elected by a vast majority of SBC delegates.

"Defend, protect - never think critically" That should be the new motto of the SBC

This whole episode has me really scratching my head. Why does someone with all that he has accomplished need to have Dr. in front of his name? He has nothing to prove, his ministry should speak for itself. But by going out and advertising he is a Dr. when he isn't, undermines his credibility and the credibility of the SBC. If you don't think it does, your being obtuse, it does, big time. Being SBC president is perceived as being a big deal even though it is mostly being chairmen of the nominating committee.

It's not mud slinging to point out the truth. I am sure had the Atlanta Journal Constitution pointed this out, it would chalked up to media bias. Come on folks put down the Kool-Aid for just a minute or two and think this through.

At a time when even Baptists are running from the name Baptist we don't need to adding to the fuel by claiming to be something we are not, especially when there isn't any reason to do so.

Exactly. No one could legitimately question his accomplishments. He is a very successful minister. The title "Dr." is superfluous, even if earned, but the fact that the degrees are from diploma mills is baffling.

We should not feel the need to have "Dr. Pastor." as President of the SBC. I'd prefer having him known as Pastor Johnny Hunt than Dr. Johnny Hunt anyday.

AND...this is coming from an SBC person.

I know it. That bad title of Dr. Why use the word pastor or reverand or anything for that matter? Just call him Johnny.

It's a descriptor. He is the pastor of FBC Woodstock. No one can question that.

I have a general rule that unless the degree is earned and it is a medical degree I will try to refer to most ministers as Reverend before I call them Doctor. There is a disconnect for me with guys who get honorary degrees and a "successful" (whatever that means) in ministry and what to be called Doctor so they can receive an elevated place in our society. I take the NPR stance and try to only call people with legitimate medical degrees Doctor. :)

Just reading your profile. I believe it says BGTC. Aren't they hostile to the SBC? If I'm wrong then please accept my apology.

Mr. Hunt preached a revival at my church in 1995. He seems to be a lot like Bobby Welch, but I doubt he'll abandon his church and let it fall apart as Mr. Welch did.

The BGCT is an SBC partner, albeit not agreeing with everything the SBC does or stands for. I identify as BGCT to inform others of the type of SBCer I am....a reluctant member.
