Being a multi-time SBC pastor and having received 2 master's degrees and completing a PhD in SBC institutions, I am well aware of our shortcomings as well. There are a couple of reasons for such "grievious matters": 1) many of our present students are products of the leftist theology of by-gone days at the seminaries; 2) there is a basic theological incompetence among many pastors, pew people, and subsequently students (there are a few reasons for this: a) seminaries of yesteryears influence, b) illiterate pastors, c) a general disdain for theological knowledge, and d) the cultural influx in the modern church); 3) many students are quick to speak and slow to think (as I am often as well [IMG] ); 4) as far as the works plus Christ idea, I just think most humans of any brand have a difficult time grasping salvation by grace alone. We are accustomed to thinking in "earning favor" terms.

Again, I would merely suggest these issues are primarily issues of influence and ignorance. But at the grassroots level, most SBCers are conservative in nature.

The SBC has its problems but it is definitely not predominately a leftist movement as Joshua suggested above.

If that's what it seemed like I suggested, then I wasn't clear enough. My point is that if there's "liberalism" even in the new SBC, how surprising is it that mainstream Christianity is liberal? Wasn't the charge against the SBC seminary faculty that they had made the seminaries as liberal as mainstream ones?

Rev. G - Although I am conservative on some theological issues, I do not believe that homosexuality is intrinsically sinful. I am the Associate Pastor of a baptist church with several gay deacons and many committed same-sex couples in the congregation.

I have been out of the USA for 4 years, so I was not aware of this. Also, I was asking for my personal information because I liked the Baptist Bookstore, and was curious to know what happened to it. My question was not intented to be an expose, or whatever you thought by your response, "Big deal!" [IMG]

Nope, just one that intereprets it contextually rather than literally.

ChristianCynic, do you ALWAYS have to be so hateful? Every time I see a post from you it seems you are so negative and full of bitterness. Maybe Zebedee didn't know about the joining of the stores together. Some stores operated under other names here until just recently and became "Lifeway" stores. I didn't know that the other's had been taken over by them....so please, go find a better attitude.

I am glad they took both Baptist & Book out of their name. First honest thing they have done since 1979.

The new superstore here in Macon has all of the "Left Behind" series, a very nice collection of WWJD paraphanalia and a wonderful CD selection, but other than that

Oh yeah, they just got the Max Lucado meets Henry Blackaby Study Bible. I was going to get one but they were out of the NRSV.

    Lifeway is a joke!!

Me thinks you see through a glass darkly. Am I to assume two men or women in a committed relationship would not be welcome in a church you Rev over. Attaboy you learned your lessons well

I was going to say something, but I responded to a post I misunderstood so my response wasn't useful. So I edited my useless comment to replace it with, uh, this useless comment ;)

    Lifeway is way cool :)

    Mr. Honeycutt:

A homosexual couple would be quite welcome to be guests in any church where I pastored, at any time, but they would not be welcome to become members.

I take this stance because I understand the Scriptures in their context .

    Mr. Joshua:

Please tell me how you interpret 1 Corinthians 6 and Galatians 5 "contextually" rather than "literally" when the Apostle Paul declares that we are not to be deceived, that homosexuals and sodomites will NOT enter the kingdom of heaven?
