I was wondering what y'all think of "scared religion"? I was doing just fine in life until God showed me what I was by nature, and what I must be by the Grace of God! I really got scared of going to a devil's hell, if I died in my lost condition. So did y'all get scared of dying lost and going to hell as one of the main reasons why you chose to heed to God's calling? I have heard several say they wouldn't give a nickel for "scared religion", but it took the fear of the Lake of Fire to help me to give in to God's callng. What say y'all??

I imagine the holy Spirit can move in many different ways to bring us to repentance.

One Sunday morning, as a nine-year-old, the Holy Spirit suddenly opened my mind and heart and showed me my sin. All those sermons and teachings about Hell, which I had heard but didn't really understand, came flooding in. This understanding of my sin and its consequences scared me to death. I headed down the aisle to my pastor, who gently guided me to further understanding of repentance and faith. After this, he asked one question, "Do you repent of your sin and trust Christ for your salvation?" My answer was "Yes."

It was not the love of Jesus that sent me to my pastor. It was my sinfulness and a fear of Hell.

I agree that the Holy Spirit will reach different people in different ways. My mother grew up Catholic and certainly knew about fear and hell. However, she never understood that God LOVED her - and that He came to die for her. Her specifically. When she heard that, she just broke and gave her heart to the Lord. She came from a life where love was not easy and that guilt was always there. But to know that God loved her was all that she needed to hear.

I was very young and just knew that I didn't want to go to hell but live with Jesus forever. In my simple way, I gave my heart to Him and have followed Him these last 35 years.

Others I know have fought God and finally gave in when the proof of Him was undeniable. Still others come because of a crisis in their lives. Because we're all each so different, I think that there are different testimonies of God's grace and calling on our lives.

Fear of God is the beginning of Wisdom. It is a "good" fear, if it works.

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (ESV)

We cannot know Christ loves us unless we understand just what it is He did on the cross and what it was that drove him to the cross:

    1. Our sin
    2. Our need of redemption
    3. God's Wrath
    4. God's justice
    5. God's Love

These doctrines may not always get presented in scholarly fashion but they do all get explained in the story of the cross.

For me, the fear of hell was there, but was mainly accepting God’s free gift.

    RE: "Scared Religion"??

    Bro Bob,

That's the exact point I was hoping to bring out in this thread!! It's with the "fear Of God" and the consequences of dying lost, that aids us in coming to Him for salvation. Without His Grace, we would all be outcasts of the Kingdom of God, IMO.

However is "fear of the Lord" the same as fright/afraid kind of fear?

I think "fear of the Lord" is knowing you are subject to God and His punishment. As John the Baptist said, who hath warned you to flee the wrath of God, which is to come. I think its very close to the same. IMO

Fear got me into church, but His love brought me forward to confess and accept His gift.

Seems to me that to preach God's love without preaching his justice makes for an incomplete gospel.

You've heard "God has a wondereful plan for your life."

Actually, if you're lost, God has a terrible plan for you.

Had it not been for my fear of hell, I doubt that I would have ever gotten saved. That's why so many are dying in their sins; they have no fear of God or of hell.
