school lunches controlled by the government?

A friend of mine says in my county, if a child brings a lunch to school, it must be "approved" for nutrition. Kids are now required to eat what the government deems "healthy" foods for lunch. A friend shared that her child was SENT HOME for not having an "approved lunch." So, the school denied access to education because of what the mom sent her for lunch!

I thought this was just something rare going on in liberal California somewhere, but no, it's right here in my rural place in WV. We homeschool, so I wasn't aware of the new regulations for the public schools.

Is this happening in your local schools, and if so, what are people doing about this intrusion into our personal lives? What right does the government have to tell people what to feed their own children? I just don't get it. Why on earth are people putting up with this?

    pre-school requirements

    From Chicago

and when the school gives you food to make up the missing ones, they will charge you.

What really got the one mom mad is that if the child did not want to drink the milk, the school would throw it away

I guess they also now have a questionaire for girls to see if they want the morning after pill along with their pudding. Wonderful :BangHead:

This is all part of Michelle Obama's School Lunch Program - see the thread here:

    http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=81618

The problem of food being sent from home and taken away has happened in other states, like NC, I believe.

In addition, vending machines selling items that are not deemed "nutritional" by the new guidelines have been removed and only those items that fall under the "new" FDA guidelines are allowed.

You can thank Michelle Obama and a lame duck congress (which includes Republicans who voted for this) for the overbearing government intrusion into your life and the lives of your children.

Several Threads have been on this topic in the News Forum:

    Hope this helps!

Yep, this is getting more common now. I remember one poor kid whose mom sent in healthy, organic foods and they took it away and replaced it with a school lunch. She wouldn't eat it. Fried chicken nuggets were part of it. Apparently, the mom didn't include all the food groups.

What gets me is what the school considers okay for a food group. We all know now that pizza was classified into a vegetable. A ham sandwich on white bread with mayo is protein, jello can be classified as a fruit, pudding as dairy, etc. I've seen some fat laden, sugar laden meals that contain about zip nutritional value, watched the kids go nuts after their sugar rush, and nobody can figure out why. DUH! Sometimes breakfast is a grain (like Fruit Loops) and they offer fruit with it, soaked in heavy syrup, and the kids get a choice of chocolate or white milk, and guess what they pick?
So much gets tossed. They HAVE to take the tray, even the lactose intolerant ones, and a lot of times they serve both juice and milk and then have kids puking because juice and milk together curdle in their bellies. It's so...weird. Yet that is better than a pb and j on wheat, some carrot sticks, some unsweetened apple sauce, a handful of almonds, and a bottle of water. My daughter typically takes a vegetarian lunch. At least she's in high school and they don't check it or she'd be in trouble.
The principal did giggle at her one time when they did backpack checks in the classroom because someone stole something, so they searched everyone. She thought it was great that my daughter had healthy stuff but was really shocked! She said "Really? This is what you eat?" She's used to seeing kids carrying candy bars, soda, and chips. LOL

Commanding to abstain from certain foods is a doctrine of devils.

This brings up a point, then. Could Christian kids dispute this food regulation on the grounds of religious freedom?

By the way, thanks, LE, for posting those links. I guess earlier this year I just skimmed through them thinking it was more garbage from liberal areas that didn't really apply to my state. . .I had no idea how widespread this is becoming.

This is a huge overstep of government authority. Sadly, such things are far too common these days.

Besides that, they don't work. They should have learned their lesson from Prohibition and the failed war on drugs. What will happen, or is happening, in our area and in others is kids are either going hungry or eating off-compass.

    >Kids are now required to eat

NO, children who purchase school lunches are required to be served . . . .

Most of the healthy stuff ends up in the trash.

Sounds like a matter for the ACLU. Doesn't quite compute. Did the school district bill the mother for the cost of the school lunch?
