    Hello all.
Something that has been on my of recent.. Why is smoking considered wrong by the church?
Is it the health risks? Is it the addiction?
Consider soda pop. It is unhealthy, and contains addictive caffeine. So is it wrong too?

I am not advocating smoking or the tabacco industry (which I dispise). I am just interested in why it is considered a sin by most Christians.

I think it's part of the "others can, I can not" mindset... just like drinking alcohol isn't nessecerily a sin...

I think if God convicts someone of drinking, smoking, soda, whatever and they ignore Him then THAT's when it really becomes a sin

Our bodies are a living temple for Our Lord.

As Unashamed Youth said, our bodies are the temple of the Lord. I wouldn't want to put something in there that has the potential to kill like tobacco does.
I guess this might be a little personal for me because my pastor's wife, who is the sweetest lady you could met is extremly sick with lung problems because of second hand smoke.
So I can kinda see the effects of it by watching her.
Teenages or atleast some that I know think it looks cool, but they don't realize it's addicting. They think "Oh not me. I'll stop in a few years." but a lot of them end up smoking for life.
I don't know that there is a specific verse speaking on not smoking, but the Bible says to avoid the apperance of evil. Now if you don't think the effects of smoaking aren't evil, then come meet Mrs. Joyce. She struggles with each breath, and she told me she feels like she's breathing from a paper bag with no hole. She can no longer sing because she can't get her breath. She wears oxegen 24/7. Her medicines make her so sick, and she never has strenghth anymore. She stays in bed for days just to come to church. SHe's facing a transplant if she gets on the list.
Guess what the real irony of it is? SHe's never smoked once in her life. SHe grew up with parents and a sister who did.
Not only will it affect the one who smoke, but those who you are around.

It is the addiction. We did not become aware of the health risks until 30-40 years ago.

Anytime one is addicted to ANYTHING, that addiction becomes more important than God...therefore, it is sin.

The few times I have chosen to smoke, it is in outright rebellion to the system. It has been a reaction to problems I was having.

Anything short of bringing glory to God as a Christian, even in the midst of problems is sin for me as a Christian.

Well, the Bible makes it clear, do not harm the your body for it is the Temple of the Lord. Sence smoking would kill your boby I believe it is wrong to do. Let's look at alcohol. It kill 18-20 million a year. I bet smoking kills more than that. I hope you dont smoke. What you sow is what you will reap. You may not reap it now, but in 30 years it will come back to you.
