No, we need the flexibility of the two services. 'Sides the USMC is not covered under the Posse Comitatus Act.

The USMC is ALREADY "folded" into the US Navy.

You are correct in that the Navy and the Marine Corps are not covered by the Act itself, they were made subject to it by DoD Regulation 32 C.F.R. Section 213.2, in 1992.

And the Act only applies to Federal troops. The National Guard, either Army or Air Force, are not included in the Act.

Something a SecDef can change if the POTUS desires.

    Yes, the mens dept.

But seriously - the article states that the Army works with the USMC very closely. In addition, the USMC does not have several support missions - such as medics, chaplains - which are provided by the Navy.

These missions are already factored into the way the MC and the Navy does war.

I don't see how being a part of the Army would enhance the Marines ability to task organize into MEU and other floating formations, which is their primary strength.

The Marine Corps is a dept of the Navy. You cannot fold the Navy into the Army. It is an absurd idea.

The US Marine Corps was founded to be the Navy Infantry.
and to be the landing force of the Navy.

When is the last time the USMC made a beach landing?

Is the reason for wanting to keep the USMC separate - simply due to tradition?

The USMC is a Dept. of the Navy. It cannot become part of the Army. It would have to be disbanned by the Navy and then the Army would need to start their won deal.

Not sure that would be the only way -

The Coast Guard which has been transferred to the Dept of the Navy during wartime - was administratively PCS from the Dept of Transportation to the Dep of Homeland Security without being disbanding.

I'll be honest, the Marines always talk about how the Army is jealous of their dress uniforms.

Naw man, I don't care about that. I'm jealous of how y'all seamlessly integrate CAS to the lowest levels.

When the birds come in close and go "Pew Pew Pew!!!" :Biggrin

For the Army, getting fixed wing CAS is like pulling teeth.

    CAS=Close Air Support

For the Marines, fixed wing CAS is organic. With the Army\AAF divorce, the Army has to call in the Air Force for the same type of mission.

That is one of the reasons the Army and the Air Force are still fighting over Army Aviation now having an armed aircraft that can offer (limited) CAS to troops on the ground. The Block 2 MQ1C Gray Eagle can carry both Missiles (4 × AGM-114 Hellfire or 8 × AIM-92 Stingers) and bombs, (4 × GBU-44/B Viper Strike). It is rumored they are working on a mini-gun and even a HELADS laser weapon system if they can get it small and light enough.
