I don't understand why the USMC would be integrated. If it is not to function within the Navy (for naval operations), then it seems like the best approach would be to close the corps all together and transfer its marines into one of the other services. Without naval operations, the "tip of the spear" for the USMC would be identical to the Army.

Yeah, their offshore loiter ability usually keeps us from needing the amphibious landing ability.

The Infantry of the Navy minus the Navy equals Infantry (and a bunch of support stuff).

I'll reiterate, saying we don't need the Marines since we haven't had a massive amphibious landing in ages is like saying we don't need our nukes since we haven't dropped an atomic bomb since WWII.

Having the threat of it keeps us from needing the actual use of it.

And the Army just isn't set up to be parked offshore somewhere as a threat.

Of course, when you need to have a brigade of paratroopers wheels up in 18 hours for worldwide forced entry, you know who gets that call.

Consolidating bureaucratic redundancies in not in keeping with good bureaucratic practices. You got to fight in the air, on the land and on the sea--also cyberspace. Turning out the lights in 4/5 ths of the Pentagon would probably be enough to fight a war somewhere. Waste, fraud and abuse is still rampant at all levels of government. We are twenty trillion dollars in debt. Our founding fathers warned about bureaucrats, bankers and lawyers getting control. Now what?

Esprit de corps is a tough thing to change.

    Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
