Wow, did I have a lot of crud hidden away in my computer. I do have a question about one of the 6 ways however....

"5. Stop Programs from starting on Windows boot: One way you can speed up your computer is to prevent programs from launching themselves at start-up. Not only do the unwanted programs delay the start of Windows, they also continue to slow down your computer since they use system resources."

How exactly does one stop programs from starting on a Windows boot? Whenever I have to reboot my computer, it takes forever for it to startup, and sometimes I don't have all day to sit around and wait for it to be fully up and running.

Stopping some programs would probably help speed things up, but I have no idea how.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Adam :)

    Adam,

This looks like a pretty good walk through on that

Both good articles with good info. However, I would never recommend anyone to mess with their registry without knowing exactly what they are doing. There are several good registry cleaners out there, such as CCleaner (multi-purpose utility, cleans out junk stuff and doubles as a registry cleaner (click Regisrty, "Scan for issues", "Fix selected issues", "Yes to all").

Along with that use Auslogics Registry Defrag to defragment your registry.

Both programs are free, by the way.

As a humor point, let's not forget the other way to speed up your computer:

Vt = square root of (2mg/ρACd)

Just speed up the bus, Gus.
    Get some more RAM, Sam,
    Get a new Chip, Chip.
    And listen to me.

    Buy a new drive, Clive.
    Clean out the junk, Punk,
    Delete the old mail, Hale.
    Then you will see.

Can there be six ways to speed your 'puter.

we live out in the country so were still on slow dial-up and it has really got slow since we switched over to Vista, don't know whether that has anything to do with it or not but my question is do you'll think any of this would help me? I have been trying to take some on-line classes and I just about go crazy before a page loads!:tonofbricks:

Get satellite Internet from WildBlue. Not as fast as DSL, but way better than dial up.

Or, if you get wireless signals in your area, I believe EDGE or EDVO is faster than dial up.
