FTR, if Hillary Clinton is the one who had the White House designated as a smoke-free place, did that apply only to cigarettes? (I guess cigars were exempt, hunh??) And how could she, when she was only the First Lady officially designate anything in or for a Government building?? I don't recall electing her to anything until 2000. After that, she could have been involved in enacting legislation to direct all government buildings to be smoke-free, I would guess, but not before then.

So if the White House has merely been 'dedicated;' as a smoke-free place, cannot the incoming President undo this?? Or the incoming First Lady, if she so choose?? If not, why not??

BTW, if smoking a cigarette will make the incoming President (or the current President or any later occupant of the office, whoever he or she may be) a more competent President and more able leader, I will personally buy and mail him (or her) a couple of cartons of 'Kentucky's Best', or any other brand they might prefer.

And he (or she) will not even have to pay the ridiculous $1 a pack tax in DC or $2 a pack tax, should they venture into Maryland, either!

I read the report of the interview 3 times, but didn't see the interview. I can't see where he lied about smoking, quitting and starting again. Is everyone just dying to call this poor chap a liar, socialist, communist, atheist and whatever pejorative suits the accuser.

I guess lots of people who smoke have quit many times before they finally quit.

    Give the bloke a break!

    Cheers,

    Jim

No, he's not a liar. Unfortunately, you are exactly what Jim describes in his posting. You, along with many here spend much of your time just looking for things to criticize President-elect Obama for simply because he won the election. You need to get over it. He will be our next president whether you like it or not!

I'm not worried about Obama's smoking. I could care less. He can't do it in my house, but so far, he hasn't accepted any invitations of mine.

I'm more worried about his policies.

This is a side issue not worth our attention, IMO.

His smoking is his stupid choice...he sets a bad example and with cancer in his family it's not the brightest option. Look what campaigning did to his appearance. He looks rather sickly. The fact that he can lie about something so little is just a reflection of his character. And he does it with a smile.

I plan to get over it after January 20, 2009. The best thing about Bush being president, is that he was no longer my governor.

Compared to the lies he told to get elected, this one is chickenfeed.

If smoking was the worst thing anyone, Christian or not, ever did, we would have a much better nation.

    You really need a hobby.

Why is it anyone's business whether the President of the United States smokes or not, and why can't the head of the executive branch of government decide if he wants to smoke in the White House?

FDR was photographed smoking a cigarette in a cigarette holder, reportedly a chain smoker
    Eisenhower cigarettes
    Herbert Hoover, expensive cigars
JFK smoked cigars and Jackie reportedly went through three packs of cigarettes a day.
LBJ occasional cigar and rolled cigarette
    Nixon occasional cigar
Gerald Ford was a constant pipe smoker
    Bill Clinton cigars.

    Grover Cleveland chewed.

All but a half-dozen presidents used tobacco in one form or another--mostly cigars and cigarettes.

Why is it suddenly a subject to bring up on Meet the Press. Why does he waffle about it? Why doesn't he simply say, "I'm going to be President of the United States. I'll smoke when I want to and in the White House if I want to. Now get off my back."

Don't worry, he can have Bush's dented up suit of armour, though it may be pretty well useless by now. What will you folks up there do without having Bush to punt around? You'll have to find a new hobby. Smoking maybe.

LOTS of people have gone back on promises to quit smoking. I don't think that makes them liars. It makes them addicts. As WC Fields said about quitting drinking:

It's easy to quit drinking. I've done it a thoooooousand times.

The remarks on this thread remind me of a comment a former pastor made in a business meeting, Quote: "You people get more excited about cutting down a tree in the parking lot than you do over a serious question about church or Biblical doctrine."

This thread reminds me of the guy in the movie "Airplane:"

    • "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking."
    • "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking."
    • "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetimenes."
    • "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue."
    :D
