    The Germans were able to do a similar feat when they evacuated Sicily to the Italian mainland. In 1943 some 60,000 German soldiers and 75,000 Italian soldiers were sent across the Straits of Messina. Obviously this was a good outcome for the Axis forces, but a bad one for the Allies.

    Yeah, we got the territory. The Allies also let much of the German army slip out of Italy at the end of the campaign. Mark Clark took Rome almost unopposed but the next day was D-Day so he never got any particular credit. He also served in World War I and the Korean War. The landing at Anzio turned into a long stalemate and the mountain fighting in Italy was for every square foot with a long delay at Monte Cassino. German General Albert Kesselring, Smiling Albert, fought a long delayed retreat.
