    Mmm, I seriously doubt that. Russia hasn’t changed that much, and war time hardships, especially to that degree, would preclude such conclusions.

    I was surprised when I introduced my wife (born and raised in the USSR) to the movie. She had never heard of little Sergei. I would have thought the tale would be the fodder of the soviet version of Disney or whoever made kids' moivies.

    Same here. I don't recall hearing anything about this, though there were plenty of stories about the Great Patriotic War. That doesn't mean there wasn't anything about this story. In fact, I've heard vague comments about such incidents. However, being the sexist that I am, I'd expect guys to gravitate toward this stuff more than gals. :Wink
