What exactly does that mean, sons of thunder? Is there any good commentaries to read about it?

I found this "that Christ called James and John Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder; perhaps they were remarkable for a loud commanding voice, they were thundering preachers; or, rather, it denotes the zeal and fervency of their spirits, which would make them active for God above their brethren. These two (saith Dr. Hammond) were to be special eminent ministers of the gospel, which is called a voice shaking the earth, Heb. 12:26. Yet John, one of those sons of thunder, was full of love and tenderness, as appears by his epistles, and was the beloved disciple."

    Mark 3:17
17And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

Wouldn't it be funny if when we get to Heaven, we see that Christ was being sarcastic here... What if, just what if, they had a sissy voice....

kinda like me calling my self tinytim!

Well, I think that they both had hard-headed, volatile, and thunderous personalities.

They argued over who was going to be greater in Heaven...more than once. Even after Jesus explained it to them.

They even tried to get Jesus in on it and they told him rather rudely that they wanted Him to "do as they asked" and place them on his right and left side in glory. He told them that they had no concept whatsoever of what they were asking.

When they came once to a Samaritan village and were not received well, they wanted the village destroyed....and not by God.

They wanted to call down fire from Heaven, themselves, as a "favor" to Jesus. Kind of like two "tough guys" who go around hurting people for the "boss". Jesus rebuked them for it.

And John, Himself, right after Jesus gives them a lesson on child-like humility, tells Jesus that He saw other people doing work for Christ that weren't "authorized" or in the "clique". I'm sure that he wanted Jesus to let them punish these people.

Jesus told him and all of them that if they were not working against them, then they must be working with them.

These two brother had a hard lesson to learn on being soft-spoken and humble.

But even with their flawed personalities, Jesus still called John, the "beloved" and he still desired for these two to be his disciples.

It makes me glad, as a hard-headed person, myself, that God loves us all and will use anyone who is submissive to Him, despite their short comings.

Some immediately think it refers to their Father... Sons of Thunder.

But recently I had someone jokingly point out that it was their mother that asked Jesus to give them privileged place in Heave.

Maybe they are called sons of THunder because of their mother. [IMG]

Either way, they eagerness to call down fire on the Samaritan village demonstrates they had something foa volitile temperament.

"Son of" is an idiom that implies "has the nature of". Sons of thunder would be people who are volatile in their personal nature. Son of God is someone who has a divine nature.

I thought it was because they were the first and last of the Apostles to be martyred, James died first and John was the last to die.

Joh 12:28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice

2Sa 22:14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.

Job 40:9 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

Ps 77:18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.

These words such as "thunder" has a "referrence" to something "Spiritual", as does everything in the world,

Lighting (light) is "Spirit", "let your "light" shine.

The Bible has it's own "Dictionary" to define these words.

Well---one of the Sons of Thunder was beheaded---ole Herod thought that'd shut his mouth----then the other son was banished to Patmos Island---where Herod must've been thinkin'

"I'll remove him so far away from civilized population--no one will be able to hear him!"

But no sooner was John on Patmos--that he grabs pen and paper in hand---and became "louder than ever before!!"

You can't "hush" the thunder---the thunder is just a "report" caused by the Lightning---Heaven's "Lightning" that is!!!! You see it Lightning---folks--its only natural for the Thunder to follow!!!
