    No we just don't want to see our heritage transformed into a model of a failed western European socialist state in far worse condition than the current situation.

    The Big 3 have held their own in the large car, pickup, and (to a smaller extent) SUV market; but they have been destroyed in the small to mid-size car and minivan market.

    Ford has put a couple of recent models out that compare favorably, but except for that, domestic isn't in the same ZIP code in that market segment--both in quality, reliability, resale value, and raw sales.

    I would think that conservatives would support saving our domestic automakers from a national security perspective or do conservatives not have a problem with the idea of relying on Japanese and German companies for our military vehicles?

    As you should know, the issue is not a desire to save them, but the reasonability of doing so. Why give money to companies to throw down the drain? That's the issue.

    You used to be a fiscal conservative. You seem no longer to be conservative in anything. Remember the days of supporting Ron Paul?

    I struggle to find a reason to give money to a company who has no clue of how to right the ship and turn things around. We are throwing good money after bad.

    Chrysler and GM will survive in some form, even if they merge. They will not go away. And this bailout is irrelevant to that. They would have survived anyway.

    Right, and the real driving force behind all this "worst economy since the great depression" lie is that they need to the people in a panic mode so that they will accept the socialization/nationalization of U.S. Industry.

    It is interesting that for eight years (and beyond) the Republicans were accused of fearmongering, of making stuff up to scare people, etc. Now it's the Dems doing it and it apparently is okay.

    As Bush said today (contradicting his own actions), bad businesses should go out of business.

    You are off topic. This thread is not about Democrats in Washington. It is about why many in the GOP are opposed to saving the domestic auto industry.
