Christian Groups Unite to Support Israel

    By Amihai Zippor

(IHC News, 27 February 2006) Pro-Israel Christian groups in the US have united to form an umbrella organization to better support the Jewish State.

Made up of mostly Evangelicals, the new Washington lobby called Christians United for Israel will provide financial, political and public relations help that seeks to strengthen the strategic relationship between Israel and America.

Led by Pastor John Hagee, an influential Evangelical from San Antonio Texas, the new organization is expected to become a powerful front for Israel much like the influential Washington Jewish lobby the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Under Hagee’s chairmanship, Christians United for Israel's board of directors will include Jerry Falwell, Gary Bauer, Benny Hinn, Jack Hayford, George Morrison, Rod Parsley and Steven Strang - all evangelical ministers.

Meanwhile, in response to Hagee’s efforts, Jewish groups have embraced his push to raise the level of support Israel receives from the Christian community.

“It's the first nationwide effort I know of to unify evangelical leaders in support of Israel. These leaders who participated speak for millions of people,” Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg of Congregation Rodfei Sholom said while attending an event marking the official launching of the organization in early February.

“This organization has phenomenal potential in supporting, defending and advocating for Israel,” Schienberg said.

Hagee has been a staunch supporter of Israel since 1981 and in 2005 declared:

“Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish state. Not since Camp David but since King David.”

Also, Hagee’s house of worship, the Cornerstone Church, is well known among Israeli politicians for its pro-Israel stance and has been addressed by high profile Israeli speakers such as former Prime Minister and current Likud Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu.
