I thought this was going to be a gimmick, but it's pretty good!

Stephen Colbert and Patrick Wilson perform the national anthem before the Mets take on the Yankees at Citi Field. Stephen Colbert is a TV talk show host and Patrick Wilson is a TV and movie actor.

Very nice. A few boos for Colbert at the beginning, eh ?

A side note...... it may not always seem like it, but I really do miss you when you’re gone.

Yes, she's incredible. Hard to believe such a powerful voice can come out of such a relatively small person.

I get the same goosebump vibe from Martina McBride. She's about 5 feet tall and weighs 100 lbs., but can really sing. Here's a live rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". When she hits the high notes and holds them, seemingly for a minute, I get the goosebumps.

Powerful vocals. As you probably know, not everyone can sing. This is a gifted lady.

I was most pleasantly surprised by Colbert and Wilson's rendition. Not only was it respectful, but for two non-professional singers, they did an excellent job with their two-part harmony. Kinda reminded me of the Everly Brothers. The Grateful Dead performance also was respectful, complete with three-part harmony. Whitney Huston, it was up to her usual standard of excellence. Marvin Gaye put too much himself into his rendition. To me, the singer of the national anthem is also leading the crowd in singing it. If I was in the stands, I couldn't sing along with Mr. Gaye.

Agreed. I was surprised at the strong finish by Patrick Wilson.

I liked his interpretation of it. We all know what the National Anthem sounds like. We've all sung it the same way. I liked that he put his stamp on it. Elevated the song from a rote recital to entertainment. At the same time I understand your point.
